CURATOR OF VISUAL ARTS MEDIA AND TECHNOLOGY MIT Museum will be responsible for cutting edge exhibitions bridging art science technology and design; building on the museums existing collections in photography holography and graphic design; deeply committed to the imaginative development safeguarding and care of a worldclass collection of artifacts (physical and digital) especially in digital media and technology; work collaboratively with museum staff to engage communities through exhibitions teaching talks programs and other activities; and extend and deepen partnerships in the Schools of Humanities Arts and Social Sciences and Architecture and Planning (including the MIT Media Lab) and the various arts entities including the Center for Art Science and Technology and the MIT Libraries.
Job Requirements
REQUIRED: Masters degree in history of art architecture design or photography or a related field; a minimum of eight years of experience as a curator and/or researcher in the field of visual arts media and technology art history design or a related field; knowledge of the history of art visual media technology design and photography; demonstrated excellence in the development interpretation management and handling of museum collections including experience identifying and developing conservation and preservation treatments for the varied collections artifacts digital media and archival materials; experience developing and maintaining museum exhibitions and exhibitionrelated programs including serving as lead curator and/or project manager for multiple largescale exhibition projects and public speaking; organizational time management and interpersonal and communication skills; the ability to develop effective work processes to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously build trust and develop meaningful relationships with diverse constituencies; discretion and judgment to deal with confidential information and/or issues; writing abilities as demonstrated by a record of exhibitions publications and conference presentations as well as other forms of public engagement such as websites blogs and other social media work. PREFERRED: A doctoral degree in history of visual arts media technology design art history or related field; senior curatorial experience with a significant record of collections and exhibitions accomplishments as well as supervisory experience; grant writing and fundraising experience; experience with collections database and management systems (the museum currently uses the MimsyXG system and Piction DAMS); experience with digital imaging technology such as digital medium format and DSLR cameras and software such as Photoshop and Lightroom; ability to read and/or fluency in a language other than English; and current drivers license. The job requires the physical handling of artifacts and all manner of archival materials. The ability to lift at least 35 pounds as well as the ability to stand and work on ones feet for extended periods is essential.
Participation in scholarly and professional organizations as well as collaborations with other museums is expected (as time allows) and some travel is required. (Occasional travel/ability to travel)
Required to travel to various sites on campus and the offsite collections facility; transport artifacts; and meet with potential donors to inspect artifacts.
Will participate in evening and weekend events as necessary.
