This position provides individual and group services to offenders within a correctional Sex Offender Management Program. Components of such services include therapy education evaluation and assessment along with custody/security and communitybased transitional aspects.

What you will do:

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Review records and interviews inmates to assist in the assessment of sexual violence level treatment needs and treatment amenability;
  • Develop and modify individual treatment plans and goals as required by the individual needs of the offenders;
  • Provide offense specific treatment to sex offenders by conducting group therapy and supplemental individual therapy status reviews homework assignment reviews and feedback and evaluations according to the Sex Offender Management Program (SOMP) framework;
  • Document assessment and treatment interventions progress or lack of utilizing the electronic medical record (EMR) and/or the offender management system (COMS).
  • Assure continuity of care for sex offenders by providing written reports for consideration of community treatment/placement and Parole Board hearings following SOMP therapist manuals and protocols providing necessary information to receiving agencies providers and facilities; provide consultation to staff other agencies and boards inside and outside DOC; workshops and follow up contact for the family and community support systems of sex offenders;
  • Promotes and is accountable for the safety and security of the clinical and correctional environment through conscientious observations and sensitive item contraband control;
  • Informs supervisor of any violations of safety and security through the report writing process attends training programs as assigned including selfdefense course to ensure selfprotection skills;
  • Participate in Sex Offender Treatment Program meetings to design and update program content receive training conduct staffing on inmates throughout the DOC to determine treatment recommendations for SOMP and other mental health services to ensure consistent delivery of sex offender treatment services throughout the DOC;
  • Review sex offender specific evaluations; provide training for the correctional system regarding the philosophy rationale treatment and management of sex offenders high risk behaviors; research maintain and analyze program statistics.

Qualifications:

  • Strong preference will be given to applicants who possess a masters degree from an accredited institution in a behavioral health concentration or human services equivalent.

Required Competencies:

  • ability to provide comprehensive clinical documentation;
  • must maintain required registration/permit/licensure as applicable to this assignment;
  • ability to work with a diverse population of inmates;
  • ability to provide education/treatment to sex offenders as part of a multidisciplinary team;
  • ability to read and comprehend the English language;
  • ability to effectively communicate fluently in English both verbally and in writing; Ability to create accessible documents and technical content that follows plain language guidelines with accessibility in mind.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Possession of a current valid permit as an Unlicensed Psychotherapist or license from the South Dakota regulatory board as one of the following: Marriage and Family Therapist Candidate Marriage and Family Therapist Licensed Professional Counselor Candidate Licensed Professional Counselor Licensed Social Worker Clinical Social Worker Psychologist Candidate or Psychologist.
  2. Graduation with a masters or doctoral degree in a mental health field such as counseling social work marriage and family therapy or psychology from a program accredited by Council for Accreditation of Counseling & Related Educational Programs (CACREP) Council of Social Work Education (CSWE) American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT or COAMFTE) or American Psychological Association (APA).
  3. License eligible as a Licensed Professional Counselor Licensed Clinical Social Work Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist or Licensed Psychologist.
  4. Experience providing sex offender treatment in a correctional environment.

Conditions of Employment:

The SD DOC is committed to a work environment free from illegal and alcohol. All job offers are contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation urine drug screen and the candidates ability to perform the essential functions of the position.

Individuals selected for the position will have the opportunity to carry Oleoresin Capsicum (OC/pepper spray) if desired. If OC spray is carried the staff carrying OC spay will be required to have direct (level 1 exposure during the training program. Individuals selected for the position must successfully complete a written and practical selfdefense exam and successfully complete CPR to AHA guidelines this includes successful completion of the practical/hands on portion as well as the written exam. Selected individuals must possess the physical ability to successfully complete the practical selfdefense exam which involves the following:

  • lift arms above head and kick as high as own waist;
  • stabilize another person to accomplish a controlled take down;
  • use arms palms of hands shins and feet to deliver blows;
  • withstand impact (slow speed or with a safety bag) on own body from strikes/blows;
  • rotate body 90 degrees with feet planted for striking with foot or using a defensive tactic;
  • get down on one or both knees and up again with multiple repetitions.

Additionally TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hire.
