The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) Northern Region Design and Engineering Services is looking for an Engineering Geologist 1/2 to help us
Keep Alaska Moving!


Base Salary for Anchorage

Engineering Geologist 1: $29.73 / hourly (OT Eligible)

Engineering Geologist 2: $34.25 / hourly (OT Eligible)


Base Salary for Fairbanks

Engineering Geologist 1: $30.62 / hourly (OT Eligible)

Engineering Geologist 2: $35.28 / hourly (OT Eligible)

What you will be doing:

Engineering Geologist 1:

  • Geotechnical Investigations: Assist with field investigations for highways and airports including site assessments soil sampling and subsurface condition evaluation.
  • Planning & Coordination: Help prepare exploration plans acquire permits and coordinate with drilling teams and suppliers.
  • Data Collection & Reporting: Record field data generate test hole logs and assist in analyzing soil and surface mapping data using software tools.
  • Supervision & Logistics: Support field crew oversee equipment and materials and manage the logistics of field operations.
  • Geophysical Surveys & Reporting: Conduct basic geophysical surveys (CCR and GPR) assist in writing geologic reports and provide data for senior geologists.
  • Other Duties: Attend training assist with public inquiries and perform various tasks as needed to support fieldwork.


Engineering Geologist 2:

PreField Investigation:

  • Independently prepare detailed exploration plans for field operations including scope equipment and timeline.
  • Coordinate with environmental and rightofway staff to ensure necessary permits are in place.
  • Select and brief the field crew organize equipment and make travel arrangements.

Field Investigations:

  • Oversee subsurface drilling geologic mapping and slope stability analysis.
  • Conduct material site and foundation geology investigations.
  • Supervise drilling operations select test hole locations and evaluate collected samples.
  • Maintain detailed project records including boring logs photographs and gINT database entries.

PostField Investigation:

  • Analyze field data prepare and submit laboratory submittals and assist in report preparation.
  • Provide processed geophysical data including radargrams and pseudosections for project design.
  • Collaborate with the Chief Engineering Geologist to assess the need for additional fieldwork and finalize recommendations.

Specialized Field Investigations:

  • Perform rock structure mapping and geophysical surveys (e.g. GPR CCR seismic refraction).
  • Supervise coring operations evaluate rock types and determine structural elements within rock masses.
  • Install testing apparatus to monitor water table fluctuations grade settlement and other geotechnical factors.

Construction Monitoring & Support:

  • Monitor construction activities including blasting operations slope stability measures and stabilization installations (e.g. gabion walls rock bolts).
  • Respond to constructionrelated issues particularly those involving rock slope stability and provide recommendations.

Miscellaneous Duties:

  • Attend meetings respond to public inquiries and participate in professional development training.
  • Assist other field staff as needed and perform additional duties to support project success.

This position is ideally located in the heart of Fairbanks at the DOT&PF complex 2301 Peger Road) which houses the Northern Regions design construction maintenance and support teams across multiple buildings all within walking distance along Peger Road. Alternatively this position can also be filled in Anchorage at the Tudor Center Drive complex. The DOT&PF Northern Region team consists of a diverse group of professionals who collaborate closely to deliver transportation projects critical to the State of Alaska. Special Requirements:

  • A valid drivers license is required for this position.
  • Frequent travel including occasional travel to remote locations.

Qualifications

Engineering Geologist 1:

A bachelors degree from an accredited college in geology geological engineering or a closely related subdiscipline.


Engineering Geologist 2:

A bachelors degree from an accredited college in geology geological engineering or a closely related subdiscipline.
AND
One year of professional engineering geology experience. This experience is met by service as an Engineering Geologist with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.

OR

A masters degree from an accredited college in geology engineering geology or geological engineering.

This position is flexibly staffed. This vacancy may be filled at either the 1 or 2 level depending on the applicants training and/or experience. The full range of salaries is listed above. Starting salary will be determined by the level the position is hired at. If filled at Level 1 promotion to the Level 2 will occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and required training as well as the applicant meeting the minimum qualifications of the higher job class.
