IRVING INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT

JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Trainer

WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Exempt

FUNDING SOURCE: Local

REPORTS TO: Director of Transportation

PAY GRADE: Admin/Prof 01

DUTY DAYS: 230

DEPARTMENT: Transportation Department

DATE REVISED: February 2023

This position is eligible for a Letter of Assurance

PRIMARY PURPOSE: The Lead Trainer is responsible for planning and implementing Bus Driver Bus Monitor and department improvement training as well as assisting the Safety Specialist in the employee evaluation process for the Transportation Department for Irving Independent School District. Provides support to the bus drivers. Rides the special education buses for Irving independent school district and ensures safe and orderly transportation of students with disabilities. Supervises Drivers and Non CDL trainees

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Education/Certification:

  • High school diploma or GED from an accredited institution preferred
  • Valid Texas Commercial Drivers License Class A or B CDL with P and S endorsements
  • Texas School Bus Driver Certification
  • DOT Physical Medical Examiners Certificate
  • TEEX Trainer the Trainer Certificate or Equivalent
  • Ability to Pass DOT physical examination and random drug testing.

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Principle methods techniques and strategies for the training of School Bus Drivers and Bus Monitors.
  • Knowledge of safe driving practices and methods.
  • Knowledge of applicable laws to the operation of school buses.
  • Effective communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills
  • Proficient skills in typing organization file maintenance and public relations
  • Ability to utilize computer and computer software
  • Accident Investigation knowledge
  • Time management



Minimum Experience:

  • Two 2 years of experience as a Flex or Bus Driver
  • Five 5 years of experience as a Certified Trainer (preferred)

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND JOB DUTIES:

  1. Provide daily observation of Drivers and Monitors to ensure safe and consistent performance of duties.
  2. Works with the Athletic Department to ensure all Coaching staff is licensed to drive a school bus and TEA certified promptly.
  3. Maintains physical and computerized files and records.
  4. Compose coordinate plan and conduct curriculum and training programs for all employees new and existing
  5. Assists in monitoring radio logging and dispatching service calls.
  6. Assists with inservice training.
  7. Demonstrates behavior that is professional ethical and responsible.
  8. Coordinate and schedule TEA classes with Region 10 Service Center.
  9. Attends required staff development as assigned by the Director and Assistant Director.
  10. Train and assist Drivers and Monitors concerning student behavior management issues and workrelated issues.
  11. Evaluate the performance of all Drivers. Council and recommend removal of applicants from the training program as appropriate.
  12. Assist in the interview process of new Drivers and Monitors.
  13. Maintains confidentiality of information.
  14. Conduct field investigations of vehicular accidents in any district vehicle.
  15. Follows all rules regulations and policies assigned by the Irving Independent School District.
  16. Assist with driving evaluations for CDL drivers and non CDL Drivers.
  17. Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Must demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written). Should be able to interpret procedures and analyze data for decisionmaking. Occasional prolonged and irregular hours.

Tools/Equipment Used: School Buses all equipment required to transport special need students First Aid Equipment Personal computer Dispatch radio Printer and Copier

Posture: Prolonged sitting and standing; frequent kneeling/squatting bending/stooping pushing/pulling and twisting

Motion: Frequent walking; repetitive computer work with frequent use of hands and wrists

Lifting: Regular light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); may lift and move textbooks and classroom equipment/bus equipment Lifting and carrying up to 40 lbs. team lifting not likely to exceed 150 lbs.; Loads and unloads vehicle making frequent stops lifting and pulling up to 20 pounds on the lever to open and close the bus door

Environment: Repetitive twisting and bending; Prolonged sitting and use of computer; Work positions include kneeling and climbing with extended reach above the head; Ability to safely exit the rear of the bus from 4 elevation; Operates vehicles (up to 60000 pounds) up to 100 miles per day in rural and city traffic; Climb steps in and out of bus up to 16 times per route from a 20 elevation 3 daily routes); Ability to walk 35 yards within 25 seconds; Drives in reverse 2 of the time which requires twisting the upper body and neck while driving; Exposures to inclement weather including heat cold rain and snow

Mental Demands: Effective communication skills (both verbal and written); Maintains effective control over groups of students; Responds appropriately in emergencies; Maintains emotional control under stressful conditions; Ability to effectively handle multiple tasks; Ability to meet established deadlines; Ability to maintain accurate records; Ability to communicate using patience tact and courtesy.

Safety: Contribute to the prevention of accidents and injuries by observing safety rules and District policy practicing the principles and skills taught in safety training wearing personal protective equipment as required reporting injuries and incidences immediately to the supervisor and being proactive in the ongoing efforts to improve and maintain workplace safety.
