The School of Materials Science and Engineering is one of the top ranked Materials programs in the Asia
Pacific regions and strongly positioned in every facet of materials science and engineering. It offers undergraduate programs in Materials Science and Engineering (Honours) as well as a number of combined degree programs with Chemical Engineering Biomedical Engineering and Commerce.
The Senior Lecturer will undertake high quality research and make a significant contribution to educational excellence in the School and Faculty particularly in computational design and modelling techniques applied to teaching and research in materials science and engineering.
About the role
Level C $150K $172k) plus 17 superannuation and annual leave loading
Fixed Term 2 years
Fulltime 35 hours per week)
The role reports to the Head of School and has no direct reports.
Specific responsibilities for this role include:
  • Actively contribute to teaching and development course coordination curriculum design course administration and quality assurance for the core stream curriculum in materials science and engineering drawing on recent practical and professional experiences.
  • Use developments in blended learning and other contemporary pedagogical practices to inform course design and delivery.
  • Supervise and provide training to higher degree research students and honours students as appropriate.
  • Attend School and Faculty meetings hold membership on university committees and participate in professional activities as appropriate.
  • Undertake a range of administrative tasks as directed by the Head of School.
  • Communicate effectively and respectfully with all staff and students in the interests of good business practice collaboration and enhancement of Universitys reputation.
  • Make independent contributions to research that have a significant impact in their field of expertise and create a nationally recognised research track record.
  • Undertake independent research in the discipline or related area (as per the norms of the discipline) making an independent contribution through professional practice and expertise.
  • Develop research groups in area of specialist expertise and research methods that are appropriate to the discipline.
  • Attract peer recognition and establish research network/s (based on the norms of the discipline) at national level.
  • Obtain research income from nationally competitive research grants (and/or research fellowships) and research endusers as a member or leader at or above the level that is relevant to the discipline in leading universities.
  • Mentor and guide students groups and colleagues; supervise HDRs to timely completion as primary supervisor; and contribute to HDR review panels.
  • Align with and actively demonstrate the Code of Conduct and Values.
  • Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others.
About the successful applicant
(Selection Criteria)
To be successful in this role you will have:
  • A PhD degree in Materials Science and Engineering Physics Chemistry or a relevant discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience in relevant computational techniques and associated tools (examples include but are not limited to machine learning densityfunctionaltheory materials informatics finiteelement modelling phasefield modelling) and demonstrated broadrange of applications in materials research.
  • A strong track record in independent and crossdisciplinary collaborative research with outcomes of high quality and high impact as demonstrated by highquality publications particularly in computational techniques applied to materials research.
  • A demonstrated track record of securing research support from competitive grant schemes and industry.
  • A demonstrated ability to work positively and cooperatively in a teaching and researchintensive environment including across disciplines.
  • A demonstrated ability to undertake quality teaching of both introductory and specialist courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
  • A demonstrated ability to develop quality curriculum in disciplines such as computational and machinelearning in material science physical properties of materials.
  • A demonstrated experience in course or program coordination and administration.
  • The ability to apply new and innovative methods for teaching including the capacity to use current and new technologies for delivery in a flexible learning environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal oral and written communication skills appropriate for interacting effectively with team members collaborators and colleagues including the ability to clearly write project and operational documents produce online contents and contribute to meetings. This includes an ability to communicate well with people of diverse backgrounds and knowledges in research computing and management.
  • Demonstrated experience of successful student supervision including but not limited to PhD Honours Masters Vacation Scholars projects.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSWs aims objectives and values in action together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
