IRVING INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT

School Nurse Specialist (RN) JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: School Nurse Specialist

WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Exempt

REPORTS TO: Director of Clinic and Health Services

PAY GRADE: Administrative 5

Days: 230 days

DEPARTMENT: School Leadership

PRIMARY PURPOSE: A registered nurse that assists with overseeing the overall health services within a school district managing a team of school nurses ensuring the delivery of quality healthcare to students coordinating health screenings implementing health policies and collaborating with school staff parents and healthcare providers to address student health needs adhering to best practices in school nursing and following all state regulations. Participate in nursing policy formation and decision making.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Certification:

  • Bachelors Degree in Nursing
  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license issued by the Texas State Board of Nursing
  • Certified by the Texas Department of Health to conduct and instruct vision hearing and spinal screening
  • Certified to screen students using the Texas Risk Assessment for Type 2 Diabetes
  • CPR/AED Certification CPR Instructor Certification
  • Stop the Bleed Instructor

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Ability to organize coordinate and evaluate health services delivery system
  • Administrative ability to manage current software management systems in nursing department
  • Ability to implement policies and procedures
  • Ability to assist with management of clinic and health services personnel
  • Knowledge of nursing procedures techniques
  • Strong organizational communication teaching and interpersonal skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word Power Point Excel presentations

Experience:

  • Five (five) or more years of experience as a publicschool nurse (RN)
  • Supervisory/mentor work experience
  • Teaching/leading department level training

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Program Management:

  1. May perform duties of the school nurse during the absence of an assigned campus nurse
  2. Works with the Director of Health Services to determine objectives and policies of the student health services program in conjunction with nurses and other staff.

  1. Participates in nursing policy formation decisionmaking and interpretation of school health
  2. Assists with implementation of school health policies and procedures regarding immunizations communicable diseases medication administration and emergency care of ill or injured
  3. Collaborates with the Director of Clinic and Health Services to integrate and implement health policies and practices in accordance with the Texas Board of Nursing and all State of Texas laws and regulations related to health care management.
  4. Develop and coordinate continuing education professional development presentations and evaluations of health programs and recommend changes to the Director based on evidencebased nursing research and findings.
  5. Assist school nurses and clinic assistants in managing all components of a coordinated health
  6. Consult with staff and professional nurses on student health problems and provide nursing guidance and assistance with individual student medical needs daily.
  7. Specialize in coordinating activities of the health program with outside agencies and members of the medical care community to ensure that students have access to adequate health care services.

  10. Serve as a member of district committees related to health and safety issues of students and staff such as crisis intervention planning teams wellness programs school health advisory risk management and safety and security committees.

Administration:

  1. Organize and have increased knowledge of student health services clinic supply management and ensure medical supplies are managed appropriately on campuses.
  2. Assist with implementation and compliance with policies established by federal and state law Nursing Practice Act for the State of Texas Texas Department of State Health Services rules and Texas Education Agency as needed.
  3. Recommend purchase replacement and repair of equipment on a district level to meet the needs of campus health services facilities.
  4. Preparation and presentation in staff meetings and district functions on continuing education changes in district policy nursing laws and legislative updates.

Personnel:

  1. Assist with recruiting interviewing selection and training of all health services personnel and make recommendations about placement assignment discipline and dismissal working cooperatively with Director of Health Services and campus principals.
  2. Assist Director of Health Services in the annual performance evaluations of the registered nurse according to the Nurse Practice Act and nursing legislative laws regarding professional school nurse practice in the state of Texas.
  3. Develop and collaborate with the Director for the implementation of training options and improvement plans to ensure exemplary operation of the Clinic and Health Services department.

Professional development:

  1. Be aware of nursing and medical developments in the health field and school nursing that could enhance program effectiveness
  2. Plan coordinate and conduct professional development orientation training and certification programs with the Director of Health Services for nurses and clinic assistants monthly.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  1. Supervision of professional school nursing (licensed registered nurses) staff
  2. Supervision of clinic assistant paraprofessional staff
  3. Supervise and document campus clinic evaluations/audits on assigned state licensed nurses according to nursing practice.
  4. Supervise data entry and aggregate statistical data submitted every
  5. Assign and supervise substitute (guest educator) nursing staff
  6. Supervise programs all data programs federal and state programs in the Clinic and Health Services Department with the Director of Health Services.
