QUALIFICATIONS:
PROGRAM:The South Fulton Police Department (SFPD) is committed to enhancing public safety and improving responses to individuals experiencing behavioral health crises. To achieve this SFPD is establishing a CoResponder Program in collaboration with a licensed mental health clinician. This initiative aims to integrate behavioral health expertise into emergency response operations ensuring individuals in crisis receive appropriate care while reducing unnecessary arrests hospitalizations and use of force incidents.
The clinician will provide onscene crisis deescalation mental health assessments and referrals to communitybased treatment options reducing strain on law enforcement and emergency medical resources. Additionally the clinician will support the departments Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) by offering training consultation and clinical expertise. CIT officers are specially trained to recognize signs of mental illness and respond effectively but having a mental health professional available for evaluations and immediate intervention will significantly improve outcomes for individuals in crisis.
The South Fulton Police Department consists of over 215 sworn officers supported by a professional staff of 39. The Police Department handles nearly 100000 calls for service a year. During a recent internal study officers dealt with approximately 2025 mental health calls per week. These calls include the following: suicidal ideations suicide attempts and cooccurring mental health issues related to drug abuse.
This partnership will enable SFPD to take a more holistic evidencebased approach to public safety fostering stronger community trust and improved interactions between law enforcement and individuals with mental health concerns.
