About the Position:
The City of San Bernardino is seeking a motivated and detailoriented Traffic Engineering Associate to join our Public Works Department. This fulltime position supports the Citys traffic safety and mobility initiatives by performing technical and professionallevel traffic engineering work. The ideal candidate will have experience with traffic analysis transportation planning and field investigations and be skilled in interpreting traffic studies implementing control devices and providing technical support on transportation projects.   • Traffic Engineering Expertise: Possesses a solid foundation in traffic control systems signal operations and transportation planning with the ability to analyze traffic data implement safety solutions and review development impacts.
  • Problem Solving and Coordination: Demonstrates a detailoriented approach to resolving traffic issues coordinating projects across departments and adapting plans to meet changing conditions or public feedback.

Day in the life consists of:

As an Engineering Associate in the Traffic Division with the City of San Bernardino your day will focus on supporting traffic safety infrastructure planning and transportation efficiency through technical analysis public service and coordination. Youll:

  • Conduct investigations of traffic conditions and evaluate citizen staff and Council request for traffic control devices or safety improvements.

  • Design traffic control plans draft signal timing adjustments and assist with implementation by working closely with street maintenance crews.

  • Review traffic studies development proposals and construction traffic control plans to ensure they meet city requirements and safety standards.

  • Collaborate with school groups civic organizations and internal departments to address community traffic concerns and promote safety initiatives.

  • Analyze traffic data and collision reports to develop solutions and support the preparation of reports or Council presentations.

  • Coordinate with outside agencies on regional planning efforts and traffic modeling studies that impact City streets.

  • Monitor and maintain traffic signal system databases and assist with troubleshooting or optimization as needed.

  • Ensure pavement striping and signage conform to legal and regulatory standards and oversee their proper application in the field.

What You Need to Qualify

Education and Experience

Bachelors degree in civil engineering; and three 3 years of progressively responsible civil or traffic engineering experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licenses Certifications and Equipment

A valid State drivers license is required.


Knowledgeof:

  • Theories principles and practices of traffic engineering including applicable traffic and zoning codes ordinances regulations and guidelines.
  • Computer applications relating to transportation and traffic engineering and analysis.
  • Research methods; data collection and analysis techniques.
  • Requirements and methods of street marking and striping.
  • Modern techniques and equipment used in design and approval of various traffic engineering studies.
  • Federal state and local laws regulations and court decisions applicable to assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Information technology and computer capabilities applicable to functional responsibilities.
  • Practices of sound business communication.
  • Equipment maintenance practices and methods.

Skill in:
  • Planning organizing designing implementing and monitoring transportation and traffic engineering projects.
  • Providing technical assistance on all aspects of traffic engineering.
  • Analyzing technical transportation design and engineering problems evaluating alternative approaches and adopting effective solutions.
  • Understanding interpreting explaining and applying City traffic operations and safety rules regulations policies procedures and applicable local state and federal legislation and regulations.
  • Reviewing and interpreting engineering plans codes regulations and other complex technical documents.
  • Presenting proposals and recommendations clearly and logically.
  • Exercising sound independent judgment within general policy guidelines.
  • Communicating clearly and effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Preparing clear concise and comprehensive correspondence reports and other written materials.
  • Working effectively with other employees.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective relationships.
