Are you looking for an administrative role performing meaningful work in a government agency Consider this Administrative Specialist I position in Troop X District 3 Field Operations of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP)!

*This is an INTERNAL POSTING open ONLY to current NC Department of Public Safety (DPS) employees and eligible RIF candidates. Temporary employees are eligible to apply.*


The Administrative Specialist I provides administrative support to the First Sergeant and other district staff in the overall operation of Troop X District 3 Field Operations. This position is responsible for performing various office duties including answering telephones typing memorandums generic business letters and related correspondence various forms and reports charts handling email correspondence maintaining files managing inventory and completing special projects. Through administrative and clerical support this position performs tasks that uphold the agency as dictated by its mission statement.The work location is Troop X District 3 Field Operations in Raleigh NC (Wake County).

Job responsibilities include the following:

  • Providing administrative informational and reference support to Troop X District 3 Field Operations.
  • Maintaining a multiline phone system for large volume of calls directing calls to the appropriate personnel and departments.
  • Managing email correspondence utilizing Microsoft Outlook; responding and disseminating key subject matter to groups and individuals.
  • Recording maintaining and verifying timekeeping balances.
  • Performing traditional office support functions (distributing mail sorting/routing incoming materials making copies scanning filing confidential data/file management).
  • Communicating and interacting with internal/external stakeholders other government agencies and members of the general public.
  • Collecting and compiling statistical data for Special Projects Surveys and Special Emphasis Enforcement Programs several times per year; disseminating data/reports to Field Operations and Troop Headquarters as needed.
  • Maintaining files and correspondence through the established filing guide system.
This is a fulltime position 40 hours per week) with State Benefits including paid vacation paid sick leave paid holidays retirement and health insurance. The mission of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP) is to safeguard and preserve the lives and property of the people in North Carolina. The NCSHP has more than 1600 troopers who cover nearly 80000 miles of North Carolina roadways more than any other state except Texas. In addition to enforcing the states traffic laws state troopers also guide traffic during hurricane evacuations reroute traffic around hazardous chemical spills and they stand ready should any act of terrorism occur. To qualify for this position applicants mustdemonstrateALL ofthe followingKSAs:

  • Experience maintaining confidential data files and/or records.

  • Experience providing customer service and/or information to the general public individuals and/or groups.

  • Experience with/knowledge of general office administrative procedures.

  • Experience utilizing a computer and associated programs (ex. Microsoft Excel Microsoft Outlook Microsoft PowerPoint Microsoft Word).


Management Preferences (Optional): These skills are not required but managers may choose to interview/select applicants who demonstrate Management Preferences.
  • Current or prior State Highway Patrol administrative/clerical work experience.
  • Current or prior administrative/clerical experience working in any/all of the following: 1 law enforcement agency 2 law firm/legal office or 3 military department/organization.
  • Experience with any/all of the following: Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC) Fiori Time Management Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD)/Workforce Management Plus Division of Criminal Information (DCI) and/or EProcurement.
