Job Description

To be successful in this mission we are seeking a visionary Principal Applied Scientist to lead pioneering research and development of new highly confidential AI applications that reimagine experiences for endcustomers (e.g. consumers patients) frontline workers (e.g. customer service agents concierge retail associates field service clinicians) and backoffice staff (e.g. claims processing medical coding). As a leading subject matter expert in NLU deep learning knowledge representation foundation models and reinforcement learning you will guide a team of scientists to invent novel generative AIpowered experiences. This role involves defining research directions developing new ML techniques conducting rigorous experiments and ensuring research translates to impactful products. You will be a handson technically fearless innovator who is passionate about building scalable scientific solutions. As a trusted advisor you will set the standard for excellence invent scalable scientifically sound solutions across teams define evaluation methods and lead complex reviews. This role wields significant influence across AWS Amazon and the global research community.

Strong background in deep learning multimodal systems and large language models (LLMs) with experience in AI safety and alignment techniques such as supervised finetuning incontext learning and reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF).
Own problems endtoend and are willing to pick up whatever knowledge youre missing to get the job done.
Goaloriented instead of methodoriented and are not afraid of unglamorous but highvalue work when needed.
Proven ability to lead and mentor interdisciplinary research teams.
Excellent communication skills and can present technical concepts to technical and nontechnical audiences including Clevel executives.
Ph.D. or advanced degree in computer science AI machine learning NLP cognitive science or a related technical field
8 years of combined academic and industry experience in developing scalable secure AI/ML systems and deploying them in production.
Proficiency in Python and leading ML frameworks like TensorFlow and PyTorch.
Experience with cloud computing platforms ideally AWS.
Proven track record of leading and delivering successful AI/ML projects in domains such as customer service sales and marketing and/or industry verticals such as healthcare travel/hospitality financial services and retail. Deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities in these areas.
Strong programming skills and experience with machine learning and agentic frameworks and tools such as TensorFlow PyTorch scikitlearn LangChain LangGraph and AWS AI/ML services.
Strong publication record in toptier journals and conferences.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $179000/year in our lowest geographic market up to $309400/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on jobrelated knowledge skills and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered equity signon payments and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package in addition to a full range of medical financial and/or other benefits.
