The University of Hawaii Kapiolani Community College Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs (Disability Support Services Office) is seeking applications for a Student Services Specialist position. Introduction:
The Disability Support Services Office (DSSO) provides services for students with documented disabilities allowing them to access instructional programs/materials and ensuring equal access to campus programs facilities and activities. The office collaborates with students faculty staff and community partners to cultivate an environment that facilitates the removal of existing barriers to the full inclusion of people with disabilities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • **This position works directly with students with learning physical psychiatric and emotional disabilities.
  • **Assist with the provision of all aspects of approved disability access services to eligible students including intake registration orientation academic support and evaluation.
  • **Arranges and coordinates the provision of disability services including but not limited to maintaining and updating confidential student records coordinating the notification of accommodations to instructional faculty providing students with assistive technology and specialized equipment and testing accommodations.
  • **Oversee the requisition maintenance and inventory of assistive technology and other specialized equipment.
  • Develop maintain and execute a communication plan for DSSOrelated services and activities to the entire campus community.
  • Assist with the recruitment training supervision and coordination of student employees.
  • Keep abreast of emerging trends in disability access services including assistive technologies in higher education.
  • **Provide office coverage and supports other staff in the office as needed
  • Assist with maintaining and updating essential information such as the campus accessibility map disability policies/procedures guidebook DSSO webpage and or social media and program technical standards.
  • This position may work evenings and/or weekends onandoff campus assignments as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree in education special education social sciences social work counseling or a related field and three 3 years of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for providing educational services or assistance to individuals with disabilities and/or special populations; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education knowledge skills and abilities as indicated.
  • Considerable working knowledge of principles practices and techniques in the area of working with students with disabilities as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts principles and methodologies.
  • Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws rules regulations and theories and systems associated with working with students with disabilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of
    creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective innovative and timely manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with
    internal and external organizations groups team leaders and members and individuals.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.
  • For supervisory work demonstrated ability to lead subordinates manage work priorities and projects and manage employee relations.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply legal and policy provisions to situations consistently.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusivity as well as the ability to work with a wide range of constituencies with diplomacy tack and sensitivity within a multicultural setting.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of guidelines procedures and techniques used in providing access services to college students with disabilities.
  • At least one year of professional experience working with students with disabilities in a postsecondary environment.
  • At least one year of professional experience working with assistive technology or demonstrated proficiency in information technology.
  • At least one year of prior professional experience working with students with learning disabilities.
  • Familiar and comfortable with basic/rudimentary American Sign Language (ASL); proficiency in ASL (credentialed/uncredentialed) highly desirable.
  • Evidence of commitment to Kapiolani Community Colleges vision of positioning itself as a model indigenous serving institution whose graduates strengthen the social economic and sustainable advancement of Hawaii and the world.
