About the Role
The Melbourne Conservatorium of Music at the University of Melbourne seeks to appoint a continuing fulltime position in Ethnomusicology. We are seeking an energetic and collegial scholar eager to shape and expand the Musicology and Ethnomusicology discipline bringing fresh perspectives on diverse musical cultures.
We welcome applicants with theoretical approaches and ethnographically grounded expertise in traditional or urban music cultures from regions such as the Indian subcontinent Southeast Asia the Middle East or the global Southareas that would enrich our current strengths in musicology ethnomusicology popular music studies and Indigenous studies.
In this role you will inspire and educate through teaching undergraduate and honours courses coordinating subjects and mentoring postgraduate students. Youll have the opportunity to contribute to a rigorous and engaging curriculum that challenges both Bachelor of Music and Breadth (general education) students while fostering a dynamic research environment.
We are looking for someone with a strong national and a promising international profile ready to make a significant impact as a thinker and researcher in the field of Ethnomusicology.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Preparation and delivery of lectures tutorials seminars and workshops in ethnomusicology and the wider curriculum in the Musicology and Ethnomusicology Area
- Coordination of academic subjects and nonwestern performing ensembles as assigned
- Curriculum development and delivery of subject material in core and elective music subjects and Breadth subjects
- Significant contributions to the field through the publication of peerreviewed articles academic monographs book chapters in edited collections as well as presentations at national and international conferences symposia and other forums
- Recruitment and supervision of honours and postgraduate students in ethnomusicology musicology and/or popular music studies as appropriate
- Expansion of the Areas research capacity through successful grant applications conference and symposium organisation and/or national and international collaborations
Who We Are Looking For
We are seeking a committed and engaging educator with experience teaching at the tertiary level a commitment to inclusivity in student learning and the ability to work collaboratively with students.
You will possess extensive organisational skills as well as excellent interpersonal and communication skills including a demonstrated ability to work with people from diverse cultural backgrounds.
This position offers a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the field of Ethnomusicology while fostering your own academic and professional growth within a collaborative and supportive environment.
You will also have:
- PhD in ethnomusicology (or a closely related discipline and employing ethnographic methods)
- A record of prior experience and effectiveness in lecturing and tutoring at the tertiary level
- Demonstrated experience developing and delivering subjects in ethnomusicology or closely related disciplines
- An ability to teach into subjects on diverse cultural traditions and geographic areas and on diverse topics (such as music and gender politics technology etc) that complement the strengths of current fulltime staff
- A significant publication record (commensurate with career stage) in leading journals and/or with leading international presses
