Job Description

General Summary

JeffersonMadison Regional Libraryis seeking candidates to be considered for the position ofSupport Staff Supervisorfor the Central Librarywho are highly motivated and who support JMRLs Mission Statement to foster personal growth and lifelong learning for all by connecting people with ideas information and each other.

The preferred starting salary for this position is $18.07 hourly $37585.60 annually). Starting offer is based on applicable education experience and internal equity. This position performs paraprofessional and supervisory work in the Central Librarys Reference Department providing general reference services on the public services desk and overseeing the work of support staff. Work is performed under the limited direction of the Supervising Reference Librarian or Adult Programming and Reference Services Manager.

Education Experience and Skills

Education and Experience:Candidates may qualify by demonstrating the required knowledge and skills outlined for the job through experience(s) other than formal education.

Preferred:
  • Knowledge of library practices particularly shelving.
  • Previous library experience.
Certifications/Licenses/Other Requirements:
  • Required to successfully pass a preemployment background check.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS ABILITIES AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:
Job Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of computer applications and Internet searching skills.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use librarys print electronic resources and other library equipment.
  • Knowledge of and ability to follow library policies and procedures associated with public services such as the Internet meeting rooms displays food and cell phone use etc.
Reading:
  • Intermediate: Ability to read and understand written materials such as newspapers technical journals multistep instruction manuals and reference materials.
Writing:
  • Intermediate: Ability to write reports prepare materials such as business letters explanations and summaries with proper format punctuation spelling and grammar using all parts of speech.
Math:
  • Intermediate: Ability to work with and understand number systems; simple formulas practical application of fractions percentages ratios/proportions and measurement.
Communication Skills:
  • Intermediate: Provide and receive complex information. May include interactions that involve stressful negative situations requiring significant tact and the ability to diffuse aggressive behavior and reach consensus. Elements of persuasion may be necessary to gain cooperation and understanding. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with JMRL staff leaders and the public.
Independence and DecisionMaking:
  • Requires Limited Direction: Normally completes work according to their own judgment requesting supervisory assistance occasionally. Manages special projects with little oversight and assignments may be reviewed upon completion. Performance reviewed periodically.
Technical Skills:
  • Skilled: Comprehensive practical knowledge of a technical field with use of analytical judgment and decisionmaking abilities appropriate to the assigned and apparent job responsibilities. Intermediate skill in Microsoft Office applications and/or departmental software.
Fiscal Responsibilities:
  • No budgetary/fiscal responsibilities.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Supervises and monitors performance for a regular group of employees or department. Provides input on hiring discipline work objectives/goals performance evaluation and work assignments.

  • May require dealing with angry frustrated and/or upset individuals.

Physical Demands:

  • Typically requires use of standard office equipment and telephone and related software and hardware uses book trucks carts and bins and any other equipment as appropriate or as assigned.
Work Environment:
  • Work is performed in office environment where there may be exposure to computer screen for extended periods of time monitor glare and dust.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
