Job Description

QUALIFICATIONS:

Certification by Kentucky Department of Education with proper counseling endorsement plus responsible experience in teaching or any equivalent experience or training.

REPORTS TO:

Elementary Principal

PRIMARY JOB GOAL:

To aid or enhance the student through the developmental process and to be a facilitator in the educational physiological and affective needs of the students; to adhere to the code of ethics adopted by the American Counseling Association.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Comprehensive knowledge of principles and practices of modern public school elementary grades education and the ability to apply them to the needs of the school; knowledge of current curriculum and instructional practices; ability to plan organize and coordinate elementary school level guidance education; ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing; ability to develop effective working relationships with the entire school community; commitment to education reform; knowledge of the growth and development characteristics of the developing child.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Maintains at all times an orderly learning atmosphere and keeps the Principal fully informed of any activities and/or problems concerning the school counseling program.

Serves as an advocate for all students.

Serves as a teaching counselor by conducting classroom guidance activities which promote KERA units that emphasize the six learning goals and 57 academic expectations.

Conducts individual counseling sessions small group sessions and support groups.

Administers and helps coordinate various assessment tools and disseminates the results.

Promotes a positive nonthreatening school environment which actively stimulates the involvement of students parents teachers administrators and the SBDM Council.

Enhances the curriculum of the school through curriculum planning student observation team meeting participation SBDM Council subcommittee participation behavior management conflict resolution and conferencing with all people involved in the school community for each individual students success.

Collaborates with existing interagency organizations emphasizing the role of communication liaison with the public.

Serves as a resource person for specific needs of the student teacher parent and administrator as well as a resource for parent education.

Provides documented followup after referral or assistance to insure credibility and accountability.

Assists the SBDM Council in developing and supporting the schools counseling mission.

Conducts an assessment of the counseling program in collaboration with the SBDM Council.

Makes home visits as needed.

Tries to cultivate relationships with teachers to help one another with student problems.

Assists with academic recognition programs within the school.

Assists with Career Day and/or career awareness activities.

Serves as a referral agent to other state and local agencies and aids in referrals to inschool programs.

Enrolls new students in classes when directed by the Principal.

Assists with new student orientation as needed.

Coordinates activities and speakers for the drugawareness program.

Assists the school administration in preparing for the opening of school and completing the records for the closing of school.

Works cooperatively with the Principal to schedule classes office time individual counseling time and workshop time.

Plans implements and supervises programs that are designed to reward students for good grades and positive behavior changes.

Completes 42 hours of Leadership Training every two years for professional growth and development.

Maintains active membership is various professional organizations as they relate to counseling.

Serves on the steering committee in planning and organizing the School Consolidated Plan.

Serves as ARC chairperson when appointed by the Principal.

Performs related duties and assumes other responsibilities as may be assigned by the Principal or Superintendent.

For partiallyfunded Title I guidance counselors

Works cooperatively with the classroom teachers in providing avenues and approaches to the solution of

Title I pupil problems.

Provides extra general Title I student counseling for the purpose of building selfconfidence and self

esteem.

Provides counseling to increase social skills and study skills of Title I students.

Assists with group and individual testing for the Title I program.

Analyzes collates and interprets test results to provide information for needs assessment and for

Title I students and their parents.

Provides administrators and teachers with information about individual Title I pupils or Title I

pupil groups useful for planning and implementing school programs.

Keeps a daily log of Title I activities of all his/her time for each school day including date time and

activity.

Serves as a member of the schools Title I advisory council.

Serves as a member of the districts Title I staff for development implementation and evaluation of the

districts Title I program.
