Job Description

Job Title: Custodian (Substitute)

Wage/Hour Status: Nonexempt

Department: Assigned Campus or Department

Reports to: Head Custodian/Principal

SUMMARY

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION and RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or equivalent preferred but not required.

Experience in a custodian role focused on building upkeep and with great physical endurance to cover a large space.

TECHNICAL SKILLS KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of minor repair techniques and building and grounds maintenance.
  • Ability to operate and maintenance of industrial cleaning equipment and appliances.
  • Ability to properly handle cleaning supplies and the safe disposal of chemical liquids and other hazardous components.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students staff and the community.
  • Ability to promote and follow Board of Education policies Superintendent Policies and building and department procedures.
  • Ability to recognize the importance of safety in the workplace follow safety rules practice safe work habits utilize appropriate safety equipment and report unsafe conditions to the appropriate administrator.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing in the English language preferred.
  • Exercise professional judgment in absences; be punctual to work meetings and appointments

Follow routine cleaning and maintenance procedures to maintain a high standard of safety cleanliness and efficiency of building operations and grounds.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge skill and/or ability required. Employees are employed by the District; therefore employees will be assigned to any campus during the year as deemed in the best interest for Custodial Services. The employee is responsible for their mode of transportation to report to assigned locations of which the District is not responsible for accidents nor expenses incurred.

Cleaning Assist to:

  1. Implement and maintain established cleaning schedule that will include cleaning of floors chalkboards wastebaskets windows furniture equipment and restrooms.
  2. Keep school building and grounds including sidewalks driveways parking lots and play areas neat and
  3. Comply with local laws and procedures for storage and disposal of trash.
  4. Maintain an inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment and order additional supplies as needed.

Maintenance and Repair Assist to:

  1. Assist with lunchroom set up including arranging tables and chairs.
  2. Regulate heat ventilation and air conditioning systems to provide appropriate temperatures and ensure economical usage of fuel water and electricity.
  3. Make minor building repairs as needed and report major repair needs to principal.
  4. Move furniture or equipment within building as directed by principals.
  5. Operate all tools including Mechanical and electrical equipment entailed to complete work duties.

Safety Assist to:

  1. Assume responsibility for opening and closing building each school day.
  2. Oversee procedures for locking checking and safeguarding facilities.
  3. Check daily to ensure that all exit doors are open and all panic bolts are working properly during hours of building occupancy.
  4. Inspect machines and equipment for safety and efficiency.
  5. Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
  6. Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting climbing etc.
  7. Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor
  8. Maintain personal appearance and hygiene.
  9. Wear assigned and required uniform clothing and nonslip shoes.

Other:

  1. Wear district employees ID badge at all times within the district premises.
  2. Foster a team environment by assisting coworkers with scheduled work demands.
  3. Exercises professional judgement in absences; is punctual to work meetings and appointments.
  4. Perform other duties as assigned by Director Principal (or designee) Campus Administrator or Department Supervisor.
  5. Employees are to adhere to Donna ISD Employee Standards of Conduct and Donna ISD Code of Ethics.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

None

LANGUAGE/MATHEMATICAL/READING SKILLS:

Ability to read and understanding instructions for cleaning maintenance and safety procedures. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide. Ability to determine weight measurement volume and distance.

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written oral or diagram or schedule form.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT

Occasional absences are understood but regular attendance is required.

The employee must maintain emotional control under stress.

While performing the duties of this job the employee works outside and inside on slippery and uneven surfaces and ladders. The employee is exposed to hot and cold temperatures dust toxic chemicals and materials. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

While performing the duties of this job strenuous walking standing climbing and heavy lifting and carrying are required of the employee. Specific vision abilities require close vision distance vision depth perception peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus. This position requires interacting with the public and staff.
