Title: Summer Foreign Language Instructor Upward Bound Program
Supervisor: Upward Bound Associate Director
Employment Period: June 2 July 25 2025 // Hours: Inperson 1020 hours per week MondayFriday

Compensation: $42 $45/hour
Program Description
Upward Bound is a yearround precollege TRIO Program funded by the U.S. Department of Education. The program targets students who are from lowincome families and/or are the first generation in their families to attend college. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete high school and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education. JCYC is a nonprofit 501c(3 agency that annually serves 7000 children and youth from all ethnic backgrounds in San Francisco. For more info about Upward Bound and JCYC visit and .
Position
Each summer JCYC Upward Bound runs a 6week summer enrichment program designed to provide students exposure to the college environment and instruction in rigorous high school academic coursework. The Summer Instructor will build and teach one to three high schoollevel courses in a Foreign Language commonly taught in high schools (Chinese French Spanish etc. and provide tutoring for each class. Classes will be on a block schedule and instructors will be compensated for preparation time.
Theideal candidate should be skilled in working collaboratively fostering a nurturing environment for youth and working with both large and small class sizes. They should demonstrate competency in the subjects they will teach and be motivated to inspire students to explore and make connections to class content. They should be detailoriented and able to navigate a fastpaced and changing environment.
Qualifications
- 1 or more years of experience teaching and/or working with high school youth in an academic environment preferred
- Ability to work with youth from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Possession of or enrollment in a teaching credential program a strong plus
- Experience in Upward Bound or similar precollege program a strong plus
Education: BA/BS from an accredited college or university is highly preferred. Current undergraduate students will still be considered.
