Job Duties

The Coordinator for Nursing Staff Development provides an essential leadership role with facilitating nursing employee orientation and ongoing staff development nursing staff competency demonstration and coordinating nursing student clinical rotations at the facility. This is done in collaboration with other facility leadership especially Nurse Managers the Training Department and Human Resources personnel by:
Providing and facilitating specialized new nursing employee clinical orientation and
preceptorship experiences
Coordinator for the Nursing Preceptorship Program
Overseeing the nursing department competency program
Coordinating Certified Nursing Assistant training for Psychiatric Care Technicians
College of Direct Support and Direct Support Professional Career Pathway for SWVMHI
in DBHDS system and promoting ongoing RN education progression
Coordinating nursing student clinical rotations and externships with area higher
education programs
Contributing to nursing recruitment and retention efforts
Ensuring nursing staff development education and competencies are consistent with
regulatory standards professional
standards the philosophy and objectives of the Department of Nursing and hospitals
mission goals and objectives.
Supervising special projects concerning the delivery of care for individuals we serve as
assigned by the Chief Nurse Officer
Taking a lead role in crisis management and problem solving with issues affecting
nursing care delivery within the context of a multidisciplinary treatment approach
Shares responsibility for departmental Nursing Performance Improvement Plan and
use of electronic health record Teaching CPR TO Hand in Hand CMS course and
other classes
Demonstrated knowledge skills and abilities to:
Develop and implement new nursing employee orientation preceptorship serving as
coach during employees probation
Develop and coordinate initial and annual nursing department competency
assessment program
Develop review and revise nursing department policies related to training students
and competencies ensuring these are current with best professional practices
accreditation agencies and facility goals
Network with Nursing Schools and SWVMHI Training Department to facilitate
orientation tours externships and clinical rotations
Chairs Nursing Recruitment and Retention Committee monthly assisting with
recruitment interviewing and retention initiatives with Nursing Management and
Human Resources
Gather prepare and report data to Nurse Manager Committee and Nursing
Recruitment & Retention Committee
Effectively use interpersonal skills to communicate listen and motivate
Build goaloriented relationships and customer relations between disciplines
departments and public
Utilize autonomy initiative and selfmotivation to achieve successful outcomes
Must be able to articulate complementary and unique role of nursing within the
multidisciplinary treatment team working with clients toward recovery from mental
illness and to role model mental health recovery concepts
Must be familiar with Virginia Board of Nursing The Joint Commission standards and
CMS requirements and know how to access and apply these standards in nursing
policies and procedures
Use advanced computer technology to communicate develop reports orientation
schedules and maintain records
Demonstrate excellent communication skills including English grammar
verbal/written
Must complete instructor level for TO (Therapeutic Options) Hand in Hand DEFUSE
and CPR Training
Think creatively manage multiple priorities use sound judgment problem solve and
resolve conflict effectively
The following physical requirements are necessary: repetitious walking and/or
standing; bending lifting and reaching overhead to position restrain transfer
transport and/or escort clients and to perform or assist them in activities of daily
living. Must have adequate vision to include peripheral abilities to recognize
hazardous situations/areas.
Work in a secure and locked environment with individuals who are experiencing acute
symptoms of mental illness and/or additional forensic/legal involvement
Provide Relief House Supervisor coverage
Be flexible with schedule and assignments be visible on all three shifts and work
extra if needed

Minimum Qualifications

Requires License or eligibility to practice as Registered Nurse by the Virginia State
Board of Nursing.
Requires graduation from an accredited school of Registered Nursing.
BSN required.

Additional Considerations

Masters degree in nursing or education preferred
Prefer significant experience in nursing management leadership and/or education
clinical resource for mental health recovery
Strongly prefer experience working with people with mental illness geriatric issues
ID/DD and/or substance abuse.
