MCFRS is seeking Mechanics that are highly skilled or have good aptitude to perform maintenance and repairsof a variety of specialized medium and heavyduty fire and emergency medical services apparatus.Successful candidates will have the following knowledge skills and abilities:
Ability to lift and move objects that weigh up to 100 lbs. and occasionally objects that weigh in excel of 100 lbs. obtainingassistanceor using mechanical advantage asappropriate.
Ability to safelyoperateand drive all fire/rescue apparatus and their respective components.
Ability and willingness to provide emergency repair service on fire/rescue/EMS apparatus and equipment outside the regular shop location.
Skill in working as a team member to provide excellent customer service.
Skill in problem solving to select organize and logically process relevant information.
The position islocatedat a warehousetype facilitylocatedin Rockville MD.
Work is performed in all seasons regardless of weather indoors and outdoors with exposure to environmental factors found in a warehouse and automotive shop.
Strict adherence to safety precautions and procedures and the use ofappropriate PPE(PPE Personal Protective Equipment) and protective devices will beat all times.
The positionmay be occasionallyto work outside of normal business hours either during the traditional second shift (i.e. later afternoon/evening and/or oncall during nights and weekends) withadditionalcompensation.
To ensure a positive workplace and tocomply withfederal state and County laws the incumbentis responsible forcompleting mandatory trainings within the first three to six months or within the specifiedtimeframe.
The selected candidates willbe requiredto successfully complete a preemployment background check and a medical exam with drug screen.
The individuals selected for this position will be considered an Essential Employee. Essential employees must report to work during a period of general emergency or liberal leave.
Please note if hired it is the employees responsibility to provide their own tools which areon the first day of employment. In addition the employeeis responsible forthe expense of obtaining andmaintaininga Class Acommercialdrivers permit and license.
The Emergency Vehicle Mechanic Technicians willbe responsible forperforming inspections testing maintenance and repairs of a variety of specialized medium and heavyduty fire and emergency medical services apparatus. These vehicles include heavy rescue squads pumpers tankers aerial ladders ambulances and specialized evacuation and mass casualty apparatus.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Ensuring the mechanical and performance safety of emergency fire and rescue vehicles.
Performing inspections lubrications fluid changes andcomponentadjustments and other routine maintenance work on equipment and vehicles related to Preventive Maintenance (PM) processes.
Utilizing diagnostic tools (both manual and electronic) to assess and evaluate required service/repairs.
Provide diagnostic assessments of repair needs based on experience.
Troubleshooting service/repair needs and performing necessary/required work ina timelyfashion.
Documenting/recording findings measurements diagnoses and needed repairs discovered during PM inspections.
Performing repairs to light medium and heavy apparatus and equipment.
Road testing vehicles during and upon completion of maintenance/repair work.
Handling hazardous waste properly;maintainingthe work area in a clean and orderly manner; and performing various shopkeeping tasks.
Operating machine shop tools and testing equipment.
Communicating with endusers about mechanical andperformance and functionsand operation.
Emergency Vehicle Mechanic Technician I:
Experience: Two 2 years of verifiable progressively responsible experience in the automotivetruck maintenance and repair trade which included problem diagnosis.
Education: Completion of high school or a High School Certificate of completion recognized in the State of Maryland.
Equivalency: An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
License:At Time of Employment Application: Possession of a valid current Class C or equivalent motor vehicle operators license from the applicants state of residence.
First Day of County Employment: Possession of at least a valid Instructional Permit for a Class A commercial drivers license (CDL) issued by the applicants state of residence.
Upon Completion of Probationary Period:Possession of a Class A CDL issued by the employees state of residence; US Environmental Protection Agencyapproved certification (for refrigerant recovery appropriate to the equipment serviced/inspected); and a Maryland State Forklift Operator License.
Within Eighteen 18 Months from Date of Appointment/Placement: Employees in this class must obtain and maintain a National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Level I certification which includes successful completion of examinations in:
T4 MediumHeavy Truck Brakes (National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE);
T5 MediumHeavy Truck Suspension and Steering (ASE);
T8 MediumHeavy Preventive Maintenance Inspection (ASE);
F1 Maintenance Inspection and Testing of Fire Apparatus (EVT); and
F2 Design and Performance Standards of Fire Apparatus (EVT).
Note: There will be no substitutions for this section.
Emergency Vehicle Mechanic Technician II:
Experience: Any combination of education experience and training equivalent to four 4 years of verifiable progressively responsible experience in problem diagnosis repair maintenance and inspection of automobiles lightmediumheavy duty diesel or gasoline trucks construction equipment and/or fire/rescue/EMS vehicles apparatus and equipment.
Education: Completion of high school or High School Certificate of completion recognized in the State of Maryland. Equivalency: An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
License: At Time of Employment Application: Possession of a valid current Class C or equivalent motor vehicle operators license from the applicants state of residence. First Day of County Employment: Possession of at least a valid Instructional Permit for Class A commercial drivers license (CDL) issued by the applicants state of residence. T3 MediumHeavy Truck Drive Train (ASE);
T6 MediumHeavy Truck Electrical/Electronic Systems (ASE);
F3 Fire Pumps and Accessories (EVT); and
F4 Fire Apparatus Electrical Systems (EVT).
Preference for interviews will be given to applicants with experience in the following:
Experience diagnosingmaintaining and repairing mediumheavyduty diesel vehicles.
Experience applying vehicle maintenance standards (organizationalmanufacturer or governmental).
Experienceutilizingshop management systems or diagnostic equipment.
Experience using fleet maintenance software or FMIS Fleet Maintenance Information Systems.
Experience with planning and organizing work responsibilities.
