What is a Home Health Aide or Nursing Assistant (HHA/CNA)

A Home Health Aide is a paraprofessional who is specifically trained and performs assigned functions of personal care to the patient in their residence under the direction instruction and supervision of the registered nurse (RN).

What are the qualifications for a Home Health Aide

• Must meet Medicare Conditions of Participation for Home Health Aide training program and competency
• Have a sympathetic attitude toward the care of the sick and elderly
• Ability to carry out directions read and write

What does a Home Health Aide do

Home Health Aide provides a variety of tasks during patient visits depending on the specific plan of care and type of patient. Some tasks include:

• Performs personal care bath and handson care as assigned.
• Completes appropriate visit records promptly as per Agency policy.
• Reports change in the patients condition and need to the RN.
• Performs household services essential to health care in the home as assigned.
• Ambulates and exercises the patient as assigned.

Do Home Health Aides work alone

Home Health Aides are autonomous but they are not alone. All field staff works with supportive clinical supervisors and the Home Health Aide is a vital part of the collaborative clinical team.
