Purpose
The Indian power market is evolving rapidly. The increasing share of variable renewable energy in the electricity system requires a flexible grid financially sound and efficient power distribution companies and demand to serve as a resource. Achieving these outcomes would need dynamic regulations new business models innovative financial instruments and robust institutional frameworks.
To enhance grid flexibility CEEW team studies the current and future power systems to inform planning and operations and procurement and dispatch of electricity in costeffective ways. We undertake grid simulation exercises technoeconomic analyses for emerging solutions such as largescale energy storage systems and identify solutions that enable marketbased procurement of electricity and effective transmission utilisation.
The candidate in this role will undertake studies on power system modelling and undertake quantitative and qualitative analysis of issues concerning integration and offtake of renewable energy. The candidate will work extensively on an open source modelling tool named GridPath and CEEWs internal data analytics platforms.
Job Duties and Accountabilities
Primary Responsibilities
Programme strategy and management
Contribute to advancing the programme strategy by building on the teams ongoing work in the sector emerging challenges in power system planning and operations and government priorities
Engage with donors as well as new and potential partners to further the work programme objectives
Ideate new research concepts with team members develop project proposals and budgets secure resources for building and expanding the work programme and deliver highquality timely outputs
Strategise communication and outreach of research outputs and ensure implementation of outreach plans
Support team members to work on their strengths and complement each other for driving impact
Build and maintain strong relationships with key policymakers and sector stakeholders based on trust and credibility
Research
Conceptualise and implement modelling studies related to electricity generation and transmission planning establishing the value and role of diverse clean energy and storage technologies in meeting demand across states and regions and simulating future power system operations at the national and subnational level
Analyse existing transmission plans interconnection regulations grid code national transmission committee proceedings and statelevel practices on transmission planning and operations to track progress and emerging challenges
Evaluate international best practices in transmission planning congestion management and optimisation of transmission assets such as marketbased approaches and timeofuse pricing
Lead efforts to build input databases for modelling exercises by designing templates and enabling data collection from concerned departments and stakeholders at the statelevel
Conduct regular discussions with stakeholders especially with state agencies transmission asset owners RE and storage industry players and other research organisations to discuss emerging issues and potential solutions and alternate models for faster deployment of RE and storage capacities and effective utilisation and buildout of transmission networks.
Regularly track important policy and regulatory developments in the sector and conduct rigorous literature review for informing the modelling efforts of the team
Write highquality research reports papers for leading peerreviewed journals and generate knowledge content through blogs policy briefs memos and presentations and other research communication materials
Selection Criteria
Qualification
A PhD/masters degree in power systems/power systems management operations research energy economics and related fields
Work experience
810 years of relevant work experience
Knowledge of power markets in advanced and emerging economies will be an advantage
Key skills
Strong analytical and research skills and proficiency in using tools such as PSS/E and DIgSILENT
Knowledge of models used for power system dispatch optimisation and adequacy assessments such as Plexos GridPath etc.
Proficiency in programming languages such as Python
Stakeholder engagement and influencing
Ability to learn new tools to manage process and drive insights from datasets
Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team and deliver timely outputs
