The Opportunity:

As part of the Commodity Inspection Division the Grain Inspection Program supports domestic and international trade of grains pulses and commodities by providing sampling weighing testing inspection and certification services that substantiate the quality quantity condition and pest free status.


As a Grain Inspector you will weigh inspect and certify wheat and four other grains and/or commodities. You may check ship holds containers and other conveyances for fitness to load grains and commodities. This position works in railroad yards grain elevators and other hazardous areas to draw samples of grains and commodities by means of approved sampling devices. In addition the Grain Inspector performs mycotoxin testing and other analytical tests as required including operating special grain inspection equipment to determine protein (NIRT) and other testing.

*Duty stations located in King County will receive a 5 premium pay.


Important Notes:


This is an intraining opportunity and may be hired as Grain Sampler/Weigher or Grain Inspector 1 depending on qualifications.

What is an intraining plan The intraining is intended to provide an opportunity for an individual to gain the required experience on the job as part of a formal intraining plan. Upon successful completion of an intraining program the incumbent will move up to the next job classification that is listed on the intraining plan if applicable.

If hired at the Grain Sampler/Weigher level the incumbent will be required to successfully complete the training plan to reach the goal class ofGrain Inspector 1.The base pay offered will take into account internal equity and may vary depending on the preferred candidates jobrelated knowledge skills and experience.


Based on qualifications the monthly salary range:
If hired as a Grain Sampler/Weigher InTraining:
Range 36 Step A $38004 Step L $50328

If hired as a Grain Inspector 1:
Range 42 Step A $43716 Step L $58380


  • This position works in both an office and industrial setting such as a railroad yard or other hazardous area where grain is being loaded into various storage units such as trains containers bags and ships.
  • While utilizing a state vehicle this position may be required to travel on a regular sporadic or as needed basis.
  • Some locations require hard hat safety vests and steel toe boots provided by WSDA.
  • Work Schedule:
    • 7:00am3:00pm or 7:00pm3:00am SundayThursday WednesdaySunday FridayTuesday or TuesdaySaturday

Grain Inspector 1
  • Must have a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) and 21 specific licenses required by the US Grain Standards Act and the USDA Agricultural Marketing Act.
  • Must have or obtain through the intraining plan four 4 basic USDA Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) commodity inspection licenses to include wheat corn soybeans sorghum and one 1 additional license based on assigned region.
  • There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employers responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.
Special Requirements:
  • Must be able to acquire and maintain a valid drivers license to travel on agency business.
  • Must have the ability to qualify for and obtain additional USDA Commodity Inspection Licenses as required.
Preferred/Desired Qualifications:
One year as a Sampler/Weigher
