POSTING OF VACANCY

School Adjustment Counselor (Long Term Substitute)

East Falmouth School

School Year

JOB GOALS: To help students overcome problems that impede learning and to assist them in emotional and psychological growth and School Adjustment Counselor will assist students with academic learning and academic achievement by providing strategic services that identify and address the socialemotional and behavioral concerns that interfere with learning. Working with parents/guardians teachers school principal/principals designee and community based resources; the school adjustment counselor will implement strategies that promote students positive school adjustment and overall wellbeing.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Masters degree in social work or counseling psychology.
  • MA DESE Licensed or eligible for licensure as a School Adjustment Counselor. Licensed Social Worker desirable.
  • Demonstrated competence in establishing strong interpersonal relationships with children and adults.
  • Knowledge of available human services in related areas.
  • Two years minimum experience in counseling school aged children in a schools setting mental health clinic or appropriate human services agency preferred.
  • Intensive course work and practical experience in social work clinical psychology counseling child development education and group processes.
  • Bilingual candidates encouraged to apply.
  • Such other alternatives as the Superintendent of Schools may deem acceptable and appropriate.
  • Safety Care Trained or willing to be trained to support school based team.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • As a member of an evaluation team writes measurable goals for IEPs to address social or emotional issues that are affecting a students ability to access the general curriculum.
  • Implements individual and group counseling and treatment services to pupils and parents as required by the IEP process.
  • Conducts Functional Behavioral Assessment to aid in the development of a Behavior Intervention Plan for students who are experiencing difficulty meeting the behavioral expectations of the schools.
  • Actively engage as a partner in the Instructional Support Team process to support our multitiered system of supports (MTSS)
  • Provides teacher consultation as necessary.
  • Serves as a referral agent to obtain necessary aid from specialized public or private organizations.
  • Provides pupil data and written reports as requested.
  • Provides home assessment for Special Education evaluations as required.
  • Attends staff meetings as requested.
  • Supervises mental healthcounseling interns as needed.
  • Works to create a school climate of caring and mutual respect for all individuals.
  • Works as a member of the school team that is available for crisis intervention to diffuse behavior problems.
  • Performs other programrelated duties as assigned.

Crisis Intervention: Furnish information which helps students to understand themselves by working with them on an individual and group basis in the solution of personal problems. Be available to help students with concerns relative to home health school and emotional adjustment. Conduct classroom social skills activities as the need arises especially as related to behavioral problems. Conduct home visits as required and provide the principal and/or designee with a report of such visits and interpretation of findings.

Special Education: Consult and work with principals and teachers in regard to the identification of children who have complex emotional problems. Work directly with the child concerned and cooperate with principals parents teachers and other school personnel in assisting such children. Establish positive relationships with the home for the purpose of assisting parents to improve economic physical or social conditions that threaten the welfare of the child.

Case Management: Perform casework service with individual students to correct those personal social or emotional maladjustments related to their educational and social progress. Perform casework service to parents as an integral part of the task of helping students to increase the parents understanding their constructive participation in resolving their childs problems and their knowledge and use of appropriate resources available. Consult and collaborate with other school personnel in gathering and giving information on a case and in establishing and planning for respective roles in the modification of the students behavior. Supervise the referral of students to and serve as liaison with such outside agencies as Juvenile Court DYS etc. as appropriate.

General: Maintain adequate log of conferences with students parents and school personnel available to principal and/or designee. Keep monthly reports of counseling activities while maintaining confidentiality and privacy concerns. Participate in professional activities. Utilize appropriate school and community resources. Confer when appropriate with school staff parents and community agencies. Communicate the role of the counselor to the school and community. Takes an active role in interpreting the schools objectives to students parents and the community. Fulfill such other responsibilities as may from time to time be assigned by the Principal and/or designee.
