The Opportunity
WSDOT Bridge & Structures Office is currently seeking a registered Structural Engineer to serve as the Mega Projects Support Engineer in Tumwater WA this role you will provide technical support and reviews for consultant work projects under construction and designbuild projects. For DesignBuild contracts the work includes development of bridge conceptual plans authoring bridge and structure technical requirements providing structural cost estimates construction submittal review and responding to Request for Information (RFI) submittals. This position will perform complex bridge designs and provide design review and construction support for transportation structures of intermediate to monumental size and importance. The success candidate will also be expected to coordinate with Region offices WSDOT Bridge Design Specialists engineers consultants and detailers. This position supports WSDOTs mission of providing safe reliable and costeffective transportation by ensuring the safety and reliability of the bridges on the state highway system.
What to Expect
The WSDOT Bridge and Structures Office has over 100 employees and is known for its technical expertise in bridge design and inspection. It provides a full range of structural engineering services to construct and maintain safe economical and reliable structures for Washingtons transportation system which includes approximately 3100 vehicular bridges. The bridge inventory includes structures such as floating bridges movable bridges suspension bridges prestressed and castinplace concrete bridges steel truss and plate girder bridges and timber bridges. The large variety of structures create many unique interesting and rewarding design experiences and challenges.
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role the Mega Projects Support Engineer will:
- Develop or review structural criteria for DesignBuild procurement documents.
- Analyze design and check structural plans and details for structures.
- Seal plans details and calculations for highway structures.
- Prepare structural calculations using computer and other methods to determine geometrics member sizes and construction details.
- Prepare and check structural quantities used in job cost estimates and develop cost estimates.
- Prepare complex detail and layout drawings and sketches.
- Review and comment on structural plans and specifications for projects.
- Facilitate resolution of construction problems and questions.
- Act as Bridge Technical Advisor communicating directly with the Project Engineer and Construction Office for questions and problems arising during construction of intermediate to major structures.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity the following are required:
- A Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering.
- A Professional Engineering License in Civil (PE) and Structural Engineering (SE) in State of Washington; or licensed as a PE and SE in another state with the ability to obtain licensure in Washington State within six 6 months of employment.
- Two 2 years of experience as a Bridge Engineer 5; or eight 8 years of bridge design and project management experience using AASHTO and WSDOT standards.
- Experience with AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications and AASHTO Guide Specifications for LRFD Seismic Bridge Design.
- Proficiency in structural design and analysis.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
- A Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering.
- Experience with the WSDOT Bridge Design Manual WSDOT Standard Specifications and WSDOT Special Provisions.
- Experience in bridge construction bridge inspection load rating or as a Bridge Technical Advisor to WSDOT Bridge Construction projects.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word PowerPoint and Excel programs.
- Experience in construction and/or inspection of transportation structures.
- Experience with the Design Build method of project delivery such as developing Requests for Proposal (RFP) or Proposals.
- Experience with leadership and project management.
- Ability to communicate the complex structural analysis and design issues in simple understandable language both verbally and in writing.

- This position requires a Structural Engineers License issued by the State of Washington. License holders from other states will be expected to obtain a WA State SE license within six 6 months of appointment.
