JOB SUMMARY: Participates in a twelvemonth learning experience through the various services of the Department of Pharmacy to learn develop and practice the skills necessary to fulfill a distinguished professional career as a health system pharmacist.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Graduation from an accredited School of Pharmacy with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree required.
  • Previous hospital experience preferred.

LICENSURE CERTIFICATION and/or REGISTRATION:

  • Registration with the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy expected within four weeks of beginning the Residency Program.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:1. Adheres to the general hospital standards to promote a cooperative work environment by utilizing communication skills interpersonal relationships and team building. 2. Completes required rotations in Practice Management Drug Information and Ambulatory Care to develop knowledge and skills specific to these areas of practice. 3. Completes elective rotations in various practice care areas to gain comprehensive knowledge and experience in hospital pharmacy practice. 4. Learns to fulfill the responsibilities of a staff pharmacist by working in the inpatient pharmacy. 5. Completes research and drug evaluation projects. 6. Documents activities to provide information needed to meet standards regulations laws and/or other administrative requirements. 7. Updates knowledge and skills of self and other health care professionals to promote continuous learning and quality improvement. 8. Participates in the team approach to quality improvement to support the Pharmacy Departments commitment to the philosophy and principles of Total Quality. 9. Participates in planning processes by establishing personal goals to facilitate residency training and contribute to the achievement of departmental and residency program objectives. 10. Provides age/developmental appropriate patient care in accordance with Age/Developmental Specific Guidelines for the age groups served when participating in patient care.

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS:Communicates on a professional level with physicians nurses and staff when discussing and drug related problems.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Possible exposure to the risk of bloodborne and/or airborne pathogens.
  • Possible exposure to infections and contagious disease.
  • Possible exposure to latex.
  • Possible exposure to cytotoxic (chemotherapeutic) agents.
  • Requires judgment/action that could result in death of patients.
  • Noise generated from telephones computers/printers hoods robot and verbal communication.
  • Subject to many interruptions.
  • Pressure due to multiple demands.
  • Potential for criminal activity (e.g. robbery).
  • Subject to changes in work schedules and areas to meet customer or department needs.
