Job Description

Primary Purpose:

Provide instructional support services and assist teacher in instruction preparation and management of classroom activities. Work under direct supervision of the teacher to help meet physical and instructional needs of individual students with disabilities inside and outside the classroom. Assist with the implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEP) including selfhelp behavior management and instruction programs. Work under general supervision of the principal and immediate direction of a certified teacher.


Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

    • Associates degree two years of study at an institution of higher learning or have met formal academic assessment
    • Valid Texas educational aide certificate

Special Knowledge/Skills:

    • Ability to assist in instructing reading writing and mathematics.
    • Ability to work well with children
    • Ability to communicate effectively
    • Ability to work with children with disabilities

Experience:

    • Some experience working with children

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Instructional Support:

  1. Provide direct instruction of students under direct supervision of the teacher.
  2. Conduct instructional exercises assigned by the teacher; work with individual students or small groups.
  3. Assist in classroom management.
  4. Conduct parent involvement activities.
  5. Assist teacher in preparing instructional materials and classroom displays.
  6. Assist with administration and scoring of objective testing instruments or work assignments.
  7. Help maintain a neat and orderly classroom.
  8. Help with inventory care and maintenance of equipment.
  9. Help teachers keep administrative records and prepare required reports.
  10. Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.

Student Management:

  1. Help supervise students throughout the school day inside and outside the classroom. This includes lunchroom bus and playground duty. Note: Bus duty includes supervising students on the bus during morning afternoon and/or field trip routes.
  2. Keep teachers informed of special needs or problems of individual students.
  3. Special Education
  4. Assist Special Education students in their regular education subjects; move with them from class to class when assigned.
  5. Help meet the individual needs of students including transferring them to and from wheelchairs lifting and positioning them and signing or interpreting instructions for them etc.
  6. Help students take care of physical needs and personal care including feeding bathroom needs and personal hygiene.
  7. Help manage the behavior of assigned students. This includes intervening in crisis situations and restraining disruptive or dangerous student behavior as needed.
  8. Assume responsibility for learning and adapting to each students special medical physical communicative and emotional needs.
  9. Work with assigned students or small groups to develop motor skills and conduct instructional exercises assigned by the teacher.

Other:

  1. Maintain confidentiality.
  2. Participate in staff development training programs to improve job performance
  3. Participate in faculty meetings and special events as assigned.
  4. Other SHARS duties as assigned.
  5. Provide Personal Care as identified in applicable student IEPs.
  6. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  7. Must be present regularly in person.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  1. None.

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Equipment Used:Standard classroom equipment including personal computer and peripherals.

Posture:Frequent walking standing stooping twisting bending kneeling pushing and pulling.

Motion:May need to control behavior through physical restraint and assist nonambulatory students.

Lifting:Move small stacks of textbooks media equipment desk and other classroom or adaptive equipment. May be required to lift and position students with physical disabilities.

Environment:Exposure to biological hazards. Work inside and outside with regular exposure to noise.

Mental Demands:Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent districtwide and statewide travel. Work prolonged or irregular hours.
