Position Summary
Reporting to the Dean of the College of Arts Sciences and Education the director is the intellectual and artistic leader of the Diggs Gallery in advancing the gallery to a prominent position in supporting and enhancing undergraduate curricular and cocurricular programs at Winston Salem State University as well as promoting the visual arts in the local regional and national community. The primary responsibilities of the director include: Provide intellectual and artistic leadership of the Gallery which supports and reinforces the mission of Winston Salem State University. Determine and achieve annual fundraising goals on behalf of the Gallery in conjunction with the Office of Academic Affairs the Office of the Dean of the College of Arts Sciences and Education and the Office of Advancement. Set shortterm and longrange goals for the Gallery that strategically positions the Gallery as a center of the arts at Winston Salem State University and the broader community. Develop and implement an exhibition calendar that advances the mission of the Gallery and supports the academic mission of the university. Develop administer and oversee the fiscal affairs of the Gallery consistent with the budgetary principles and practices of the university to support exhibitions marketing educational programs conservation and acquisition. Work closely with the Office of Academic Affairs and the Office of the Dean of The College of Arts Sciences and Education and other institutional colleagues to conduct the affairs of the Gallery consistent with the best university practices. Oversee and manage Gallerys curatorial records university art collection and research. Develop Gallery publications publicity and related educational activities. Manage Gallery staff consistent with best practices of human resource management and professional development at the university.
Preferred Years Experience Skills Training Education
The director is a creative and collaborative manager with the good administrative skills fiscal oversight abilities community relations skills and an ability to work well with a broad constituency of stakeholders. M.A. in museum studies or arts administration preferred; M.A. in art history or M.F.A in studio art. Knowledge of the history of art particularly African African American and African diasporic art. Commitment to the public dimension of the visual arts and public service.
