The Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services (DPWES) seeks a Trades Supervisor who will plan coordinate supervise and has site responsibility for work projects involving multiple trades. Supervises the work of trade staff and participates in the full range of traderelated activities. Responsibilities also include preparations of specifications for material tool and equipment purchases; cost estimating; coordination of work with third parties and compliance with proper national state and local safety policies and codes.

DPWES provides awardwinning solid waste collection services for approximately 45000 homes operates a transfer station and landfill regulates solid waste services and leads sustainability initiatives to promote zero waste goals for Fairfax County. DPWES Solid Waste is a diverse work force of approximately 300 merit and 50 nonmerit employees and has an annual operating budget of more than $100M. Our nationallyrecognized team of professionals are working together towards a singular goal: providing environmentallyresponsible and costeffective management of municipal solid waste keeping Fairfax County safe green healthy and clean.

This position is assigned at the DPWES I66 Transfer Station 4618 Ox Rd Fairfax VA 22035.

Under general supervision the successful candidate will plan coordinate supervise and will have site responsibility for work projects involving multiple trades. This position supervises the work of trade staff and participates in a full range of traderelated activities. The responsibilities also include preparations of specifications for material tool and equipment purchases; cost estimating; coordination of work with third parties and compliance with proper national state and local safety policies and codes. This position attends offsite meetings training and/or conferences.

Performs complex and journey level traderelated work. Develops prioritizes and manages schedules for routine and ad hoc construction maintenance preventive maintenance renovation repair and inspection activities. Establishes efficient and costeffective traderelated procedures. He or She will assist with the preparation of specifications for the purchase of materials tools and equipment and will ensure that all materials tools and equipment are available and in proper working order and make adjustments and repairs as necessary. Maintains the inventory of smallmotorized equipment hand tools power tools and test equipment assigned to the shop and work unit. This position coordinates the maintenance and repair of heavy equipment with third parties and reviews all service requests to determine appropriate skills needed for the job to include materials tools methods time and personnel requirements. He or she will coordinate the work of subordinate skilled trades workers by assigning work schedules for the staff and will make decisions regarding hiring performance reviews and promotion of employees. He or She will document and addresses behavior problems. Prepares formal and informal labor and material estimates for current and future jobs. Responds and assigns staff to emergency calls or situations. Prepares submits and maintains traderelated records reports and correspondence. Assists with preparation of capital and operations budgets and prioritization of expenditures.

Note: This position is designated as Emergency Service Personnel. Employees in this position must fulfill emergency service duties and comply with Solid Waste and DPWES safety program and guidelines.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education experience and training equivalent to the following: High school graduation or a GED issued by a state department of education plus completion of a 4 year apprenticelevel traderelated vocational training program or 4 years of qualifying trade related experience; plus three years journeylevel traderelated experience.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:


NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check a preemployment physical examination and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • VA Waste Management Facility Operator Class I and II License.
  • Three or more years of experience supervising staff including tradesmen.
  • Three or more years of experience in maintaining heavy trucks and off road.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. without assistance and 25 to 50 pounds with or without assistance. Ability to operate light medium and heavy equipment. Ability to see and hear as incumbent may be exposed to dangerous mobile and nonmobile machinery/equipment and loud noises. Ability to stand walk bend stoop crouch reach and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions for lengthy periods of time. Ability to work around and be exposed to hazardous chemicals odors and infectious diseases. Ability to work in adverse weather conditions and temperatures. Physical strength and dexterity needed to handle various types of equipment and materials. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
