Job Description
Custopharm Inc. is a Carlsbad California based generic pharmaceutical company. We are working towards becoming a US leader in generic injectable while striving to make therapies more accessible through our development portfolio of high barrier products. The Company is presently at the early stages of a high growth phase.
We are seeking a Vice President Research & Development to join our team! The success of the Vice President Research & Development is viewed as essential to the longterm growth and success of the organization. This individual will be responsible for the overall scientific direction and project oversight of our generic drug portfolio including integration into our contract manufacturing programs for Custopharm. This is an exciting opportunity for an individual with relevant technical and scientific qualifications to provide leadership and strategic input across Custopharm. This individual will understand the key strategic levers of a successful generics business including best practices and strategies for product development troubleshooting development challenges collaboration in transitioning development activities into a suitable contract manufacturing arrangement and timetomarket. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to make an impact at a time of high growth in this sector of the pharmaceutical industry. This position reports to the Chief Executive Officer.
Requirements
- Develop new products to increase the presence of Custopharm as a leading provider of quality injectable generic
- Provide scientific and technical leadership in critical disciplines such as process development R&D strategy and regulatory approach
- Develop a strong scientific and technical team creating the right alignment setting aggressive business goals and hiring the right talent to aggressively drive growth and maintain capacity to take on new development projects
- Collaborate with other members of Custopharm in key client interface situations and be the companys technical face to the market
- Provide leadership and important technical and scientific input in the planning and delivery of developed products to contract manufacturing organizations
- Develop strategies and discipline around development programs to assure ANDAs are filed annually within development timelines while attaining approval time that is less than the industry average
- Responsible for departmental budget preparation personnel development project coordination and longrange planning
- Improve processes and timelines for the transfer into the commercial manufacturing business
- Significantly reduce business risk for new technologies and investments
- Effectively communicate strategic decisions for project and resource selection that will result in the greatest business impact and value to key stakeholders
- Responsible for maintenance of effective relationships with customers suppliers and regulatory agencies
- Strive to achieve reduced changes in project scope and direction and overall productive vendor partnerships
- Provide scientific review / recommendations regarding potential in/outlicensing opportunities as requested
- Identifying appropriate development opportunities for team members building on the strengths available and complementing the skills base as needed
- Serve as an example of how to successfully collaborate cross functionally within the organization with technical manufacturing and commercial groups
- Provide the business acumen needed to make key product development decisions and conveying the impact of those decisions to the team
- Detect product and technology opportunities speedily developing programs to address them and delivering market ready products
- Improve the overall product development process by creating greater organizational efficiencies and a more systematic and specific process across the entire value chain from project inception to ANDAs filings
- Understand the essential product development and business needs of the generic business

- Ability to work hands on in a small organization
- Ability to provide direct reports with clear business objectives performance metrics and strategy
- Advanced degree in a pharmaceutical science is required (PhD is preferred)
- Must have experience in leading development activities for an organization for multiple products through commercial launch
- Direct experience with sterile injectable is required
- The position has a strong component of partner knowledge and interface; Interactions with partners must be scientifically sound tactfully presented
- Demonstrated track record of effective project management: managing multiple projects adhering to strict time lines effectively managing and developing direct reports and solving complex problems creatively whether scientific or managerial in nature
