Job Description

Position Summary
This position is located in the Chancellors Science Scholars Program within the College of Arts and Sciences. The Program Coordinator will coordinate retention undergraduate research and graduate placement initiatives for junior and senior UNC CH Chancellors Science Scholars. The Coordinator will help the students develop the skills needed to excel in STEM majors at UNC and to move into top MD/PhD programs. The Coordinator is responsible for monitoring the success of the students and also for identifying any potential issues working collaboratively with the Office of Admissions the Graduate School and UNC Career Services as well as with the CSS leadership group and other departments as needed. Responsibilities include: Providing academic and career advising and identifying internships graduate programs and job opportunities. Working with the leadership group to monitor students academic and research progress and design and implement intervention strategies for students who need help in academic performance. Mentoring students through summer internship application process and grant writing connect students with faculty mentors and outside internships or summer research opportunities and prepare students for transitioning into PhD or MD/PhD programs. Working with the leadership group to design and lead team building group dynamics and collaboration skills programs. Coordinating a peermentoring program with first and secondyear students. Leading a professional development course for students and additional programming throughout the academic term. Serving as an advocate and liaison for scholars with various university departments and outside organizations. Planning and coordinating Summer EXCELERATOR (our summer transition program) for first year students. Has equal responsibility with other program coordinators. Supervising residential staff (Residential Program Assistants) during the Summer EXCELERATOR program. Work with other program staff Executive Director Registrars Office and faculty to coordinate course requests and priority registration. Coordinate with the Office of Student Conduct and report to program leadership for making decisions about student eligibility to participate in the program.

Required Qualifications Competencies And Experience
Two 2 years of managing research projects (mentoring) of undergraduate and graduate students; or Two 2 years of experience managing undergraduate academic programs for minority students; or Two 2 years of experience with managing or developing outreach programs for minority students; or A combination of the above experiences that total 4 years. Knowledge of: University application and enrollment procedures Graduate admissions procedures and testing requirements University provided student services Office software products presentations and basic statistical methods Researching and finding appropriate internship Pertinent federal state and local laws and regulations related to grant processes Recordkeeping and report preparation methods and tools Principles of providing work direction and guidance to others Ability to: Work in a collaborative team environment working with faculty staff and administrators taking advantage of their expertise experience knowledge connections and stature Motivate Scholars and hold them accountable to program goals Participate in development of the CSS program with the Program Committee Provide timely information to individuals and groups as requested Apply the policies and procedures of the university and the grant project initiatives Maintain records and prepare required reports Prepare and administer expenditure projections and alternatives Communicate effectively both orally and in writing Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others Interface in a professional manner with outside agencies universities and businesses Collaborate with university personnel and key project staff to track program effectiveness based on milestones for student success

Preferred Qualifications Competencies And Experience
Preference will be given to individuals holding a graduate degree in a STEM field.
