Job Description

Position: Air Quality Partnership for NYC Schools Project Contractor

Department: Racial Justice Center

Terms of Employment: PartTime/Temporary/NonExempt/6 MonthContract Position (A minimum of 20 hours per week). NYCLU is currently working in a hybrid model; a number of in person days will be required. Will require travel to NYC schools which are located in all five boroughs including Staten Island.

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

The Air Quality Partnership for NYC Schools is a collaboration between NYCLU Fordham University Resources for the Future and TREEage. The Project Contractor will ensure the ongoing success of the research being conducted by the Air Quality Partnership for NYC Schools of which the NYCLU is a founding member. The project contractor will lead and sustain consistent datacollection and management of the partnership including overseeing and coordination of undergraduate and graduate research assistants to maintain engaged partnership. The partnership includes engaging administrators faculty and students at our 20 participating high schools throughout NYC. The majority of the project contractors time will be spent overseeing and conducting data collection and cleaning. This will include visiting the schools located in all five boroughs to collect data from installed monitors and to motivate partner faculty and students. The project contractor will interact with faculty and students at our partner schools both in person and remotely.


ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collecting meteorological and air quality data from partner schools.
  • Ensuring timely completion of building condition surveys (ideally onceperweek for each of five partner students at each school to achieve daily data resolution).
  • Creating and maintaining records of data collection outcomes and variables including disaggregating data by community characteristics around partner schools (e.g. by race gender proximity to highways and age) and condition of the school buildings.
  • Providing a final white paper or memo that describes the findings disaggregated by community characteristics.
  • Managing and facilitating standing coalition meetings with key stakeholders and community partners.
  • Maintaining a line of communication to partner schools with installed weather stations and air quality monitors
  • Creating datasets presentations and educational materials for partner schools.
  • Maintaining the building survey including making updates in response to feedback from partner students or teachers.
  • Maintaining records of participation by partner students and faculty for weekly reminders and allocation of gift cards.
  • Activating student and faculty participation by creating a userfriendly tracking system interviewing students and creating collective/group projects.
  • Drafting a final memo of air monitoring and air quality impacts that include recommendations for improvements.
  • Establishing regular checkins with Marc Conte our Fordham University partner who leads the partnership with whom the candidate will work closely on a regular basis including the existing research assistants comprising undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Repeated travel to the partner schools which are located in all five boroughs including Staten Island.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A minimum of one year of experience in natural science with a quantitative focus.
  • A minimum higher education degree required preferred relevant study area.
  • At least one year of data collection and analysis.
  • A demonstrated passion for environmental justice and environmental racism.
  • Demonstrated ability to support diversity equity and inclusion in the workplace.
  • Demonstrate willingness to work unconventional hours that may include evenings and weekends.
  • Availability to complete the major duties and responsibilities which are expected to take at least 20 hrs/wk not including travel to/from partner schools throughout NYC.
  • The expectation is that this project requires a minimum of 20 hours per week.
