The University of Hawaii West Oahu (UHWO) seeks an exemplary educator to teach and develop special education courses and licensure programs for its established and emerging Bachelor of Education preK12 programs of study. Priority given to candidates with experience in developing undergraduate special education curricula aligned with the professional standards of the discipline including but not limited to the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC).


Duties:

  1. Teach undergraduate courses in special education
  2. Provide leadership in the development of preK12 special education licensure programs
  3. Supervise early field experience practicum and/or student teaching
  4. Establish and maintain positive working relationships with area schools
  5. Conduct scholarly research and creative endeavors leading to peerreviewed publications
  6. Participate in professional education associations in the candidates discipline
  7. Pursue professional development activities to stay current in the field
  8. Contribute to program assessment
  9. Provide service to the profession and broader community
  10. Advise undergraduate teacher candidates
  11. Participate in faculty governance


Minimum qualifications:

  1. Earned doctorate in one or more of the Special Education fields from a regionally accredited and recognized institution
  2. Three3 or more years of excellent special education teaching experience in preK12 special education classrooms such as selfcontained resource room or inclusion environments
  3. Commitment to standardsbased teacher preparation that is informed by current research and practice in special education
  4. Scholarly publications in reputable peerreviewed journals refereed presentations at professional conferences or demonstrated potential to conduct research and publish scholarly works on topics relevant to the education of students with disabilities
  5. Successful experience with online and/or other technologyassisted instruction
  6. Interest in and evidence of quality service to the profession and community at large
  7. Strong collaboration skills with university colleagues and school districts
  8. Demonstrated commitment to diversity and the education of culturally and linguistically diverse populations and persons with disabilities
  9. ABD candidates must earn their doctorate byJanuary 1 2026.


Desirable qualifications:

  1. Degree and licensed teaching experience in regular early childhood elementary middlelevel and/or secondary education
  2. Commitment to knowledge of and/or experience with the mission and purpose of the University of Hawaii West Oahu to position the university as a leading indigenousserving higher education institution.
  3. Successful experience developing innovative technologybased courses for delivery to nontraditional students.
  4. Knowledge of Council for Exceptional Children Hawaii State and CAEP National accreditation standards and procedures.
  5. Knowledge of and experience working in Professional Development Schools.
  6. Demonstrated teaching excellence in culturally and linguistically diverse settings
  7. Excellent postsecondary teaching in a regionally accredited teacher education program
  8. Evidence of a focused scholarly research agenda that informs the candidates practice.
