We are seeking a Software Development Manager for the Search Engine team. The team plays a critical role in powering Amazons product search capabilities which is a core part of the Customer Experience.
As the Software Development Manager you would be responsible for leading a team that designs develops and enhances the query serving and indexing components of this missioncritical search infrastructure.
The ideal candidate would have extensive experience leading highperforming teams building largescale distributed systems particularly in the areas of information retrieval natural language processing and machine learning. Strong technical depth product sense and people management skills are critical for success in this role.
Key job responsibilities
Manage a team of talented Software Engineers to architect implement and maintain the complex systems that power Amazons product search. Foster a culture of innovation excellence and customerobsession within the engineering team.
Collaborate with Principal Engineers and data scientists to build a roadmap of features to support search and discovery needs of Amazon customers.
Partner crossfunctionally with other teams to provide a bestinclass production environment for semantic search experimentation and operation.
Oversee the development and iteration of the Lucenebased Search Engine that supports both lexical and semantic search capabilities.
Ensure that the search platform can handle high throughput and strict latency requirements to deliver a fast and responsive shopping experience.
Drive process improvements setting technical direction and making strategic decisions to evolve the Lucenebased search infrastructure.

A day in the life of the Search Engine Software Development Manager involves close collaboration across multiple teams and locations to continuously enhance the platform. This includes:
Global Coordination:
Partnering with engineering teams in Palo Alto Dublin and Tokyo to align on roadmaps share learnings and tackle crossteam dependencies.
Interfacing with science partners across different organizations to incorporate the latest advancements in areas like natural language processing and approximate nearest neighbor search.
Team Leadership:
Fostering a culture of innovation by brainstorming with the local team on new ideas and bottomup improvements for the Lucene KNN platform.
Contributing to whiteboarding sessions and helping the team shape promising concepts to be reviewed with Principal Engineers. Providing technical and strategic guidance to the team as they architect implement and maintain the complex search systems.
CrossFunctional Alignment:
Working closely with key stakeholders across the broader Search stack to understand dependencies remove blockers and contribute to joint goals.
Advocating for the teams priorities and ensuring the Lucene platform seamlessly integrates with the endtoend search experience.
3 years of engineering team management experience
7 years of working directly within engineering teams experience
3 years of designing or architecting (design patterns reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
8 years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience
Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle including coding standards code reviews source control management build processes testing certification and livesite operations
Experience partnering with product or program management teams
Experience in communicating with users other technical teams and senior leadership to collect requirements describe software product features technical designs and product strategy
Experience in recruiting hiring mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills and make them more effective product software engineers
Bachelors degree
