Clark College is currently accepting applications for a fulltime Tenuretrack English as a Second Language (ESL) Professor. The ESL Department teaches oral and written communication skills to immigrants and refugees. Instruction is contextualized in all levels from preliteracy to precollege in order to effectively transition students into work college programs and College and Academic Preparation (CAP) courses. In CAP courses students prepare to transition directly into collegelevel math and English coursework and can also earn their high school diploma.


The successful candidate must be flexible and available to fulfill department needs such as teaching Oral Communication Written Communication and all levels from preliteracy to collegeprep in addition to developing curriculum. Possessing excellent classroom teaching and communication skills the ideal candidate will have experience developing contextualized curriculum to improve student learning outcomes.


The ESL faculty member will also be able and willing to work collaboratively in a variety of departmentlevel activities and collegewide projects. The faculty member will teach 16 credits per quarter which may include an evening class assignment.


Department and college service work is expected with the position (as assigned by the division or college) to support the institutional mission and goals foremost being student success and retention. This position begins September 12 2025.

Position Responsibilities

FACULTY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Instruct all classes as an expert in the discipline using active learning approaches that both engage and facilitate student learning.
  • Advise and assist students in their educational and career development.
  • Strive to enhance teaching and learning techniques.
  • Pursue professional development to stay current in the field.
  • Obtain and maintain ProfessionalTechnical Certification requirements.
  • Participate in program curriculum development and assessment activities.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues businesses advisory committees and other educational partners to create unique learning opportunities at Clark College.
  • Participate in decisionmaking processes by taking part in department and college committees.
  • Work well with people of all ages from academically culturally and socioeconomically diverse backgrounds.
  • Understand and commit to the mission of Clark College.
  • Work cooperatively in a variety of departmentlevel activities and college or companywide projects.
  • Pursue professional development to enhance teaching and learning in the department and College.

POSITION SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Able to teach all levels from preliteracy to collegeprep as well as both oral and written communication skills of the English language.
  • Contextualize instruction to improve student learning outcomes.
  • Support adjunct professors with curriculum and assessments.
  • Use a variety of teaching and assessment techniques including the use of technology that enhances student success and improve digital literacy in alignment with federal requirements.
  • Willingness to teach in person during nontraditional class times including evenings.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES:

  • Possession of one of the following academic credentials:
    • MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) or
    • MA in a related field AND a TESOL Certificate or
    • MA in a related field with at least three years FTequivalent teaching experience with adult refugees or immigrants at a US community college adult education or other postsecondary setting.
  • Experience teaching adult refugees or immigrants.
  • Experience designing and teaching a contextualized curriculum.
  • Demonstrated professional development and commitment to student engagement and learning.

Supplemental Information

SALARY STATEMENT:

Starting salary is $78327 (nonnegotiable). Faculty may be eligible to advance every other year; current top step is $110332. Salary is for a 173day contract; additional compensation is available for summer and moonlight teaching and doctoral and vocational stipends. Please note the salary may be adjusted for theyear pending the legislatively funded costofliving.
