Title: Strength and Conditioning Graduate Student Assistant

Hiring Unit: UHM Athletics

Responsibilities:

  • Under the general direction of the Head Strength and Conditioning Coordinator assist the Strength and Conditioning Staff in the daily training of studentathletes.
  • Responsible for creating a functional training program for each assigned sport. The program will include the following components: strength training speed work agility endurance plyometrics core training flexibility rehabilitation and testing and evaluation of the student athletes.
  • Responsibilities include training studentathletes for assigned sports and assisting other sports as needed.
  • Maintain collaborative working relationships with administrators and coaches in the department other college offices and appropriate relationships with members of the media donors and other individuals interested in the sports program.
  • Responsible for performing the duties of a Campus Security Authority as defined by University policy and federal law with regards to the Clery Act.
  • Maintains confidentiality to include but not limited to information files and records that the incumbent may obtain or possess in accordance with federal and state laws and University of Hawaii policies.
  • Know recognize and comply with the laws policies rules and regulations governing the University of Hawaii and its employees and the rules of the NCAA and affiliated conferences as now constituted or as may be amended in the future. Immediately advises the Director of Athletics or designee if you have reasonable cause to believe violations whether by employees or students have occurred or will occur.
  • Other duties as assigned.

CRITERIA: Must be classified degreeseeking student in a Masters program under the UHM Office of Graduate Education; be a Graduate School student enrolled in at least six 6 credit hours per semester at the University of Hawaii Manoa. Note: International students must take 8 or more credits (fulltime) which is a requirement to have a I20; maintain the requirements of a Graduate School student including Grade Point Average requirements; and be in good academic standing.

BENEFITS: A Graduate Student Assistant may receive tuition up to 9 credits hours per semester maximum based on the University of Hawaii at Manoa General Graduate School rate or 100 Percent 100 of the individuals tuition cost (whichever is less) plus general fees. Business nursing dental hygiene architecture law and engineering tuition and fees along with any other tuition and fees that are not classified within the general tuition and fees will not be covered. Tuition does not include payment for Outreach College extension courses. GSA will be responsible for payment to Outreach College. GSA will receive a monthly stipend for room and board for 11 months (July through May). The Department will pay for GSAs required books (up to 9 credit hours). All benefits will be prorated should the approval and clearance be after July 1 2025. Appointment renewable upon satisfactory performance and availability of funds.

Individual Associated with a Prospective StudentAthlete Football and Basketball. An individual associated with a prospective studentathlete is any person who maintains (or directs others to maintain) contact with prospective studentathlete the prospective studentathletes relatives or legal guardians or coaches at any point during the prospective studentathletes participation in football and/or basketball and whose contact is directly or indirectly related to either the prospective studentathletes athletic skills and abilities or the prospective studentathletes recruitment by or enrollment in an NCAA institution. This definition includes but is not limited to parents legal guardians handlers personal trainers and coaches. An individual who meets this definition retains such status during the enrollment of the prospective studentathlete at the institution.

Appointment Period: July 1 2025 to May 31 2026

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in exercise science or related field;
  • One 1 year experience in strength and conditioning training at the collegiate level preferred;
  • or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Current certification through a nationally accredited strength and conditioning association (CSCCa or NSCA)
  • Current First aid/CPR and AED certification.
  • Strong work ethic great energy and enthusiasm desire to pursue a career in strength and conditioning.

Desirable Qualifications: USAW certification.
