Job Description

General Summary


ThisCommunityService Officer is anticipated to be assigned to the Traffic Unit as a Traffic Control Community Service Officer which will be responsible for parking citations parking issues traffic control traffic hazards etc. Community Service Officers (CSO) perform nonsworn unarmed law enforcement related tasks for the Charlottesville Police Department. Community Service Officers DO NOT have powers of arrest. These tasks include but are not restricted to; Traffic Control/Parking Enforcement report writing and/or various administrative tasks.

The preferred hiring amount will be $19.50 $22.17an hour $40560.00 to $46113.60 annually).As of March 28 2024 this position is in the Labor and Trades bargaining unit in accordance with the CitysCollective Bargaining Ordinance (Ordinance No. 22128. Starting pay for this position is based on applicable education experience and internal equity. Future wage adjustments are subject to terms and conditions of the collective bargaining agreement between the City and the exclusive bargaining representative. The parties are in the process of negotiating the collective bargaining agreement which will take effect on July 1 2025.

Starting offer is based on applicable education experience and internal equity. This is a fulltime nonexempt position. Essential Responsibilities and Duties

This position is anticipated to be assigned to the Traffic Unit:

Community Service Officers will normally be assigned to one unit but may be required to transfer or complete duties from each service area as assigned. The other CSO units are:

Minimum Qualifications:

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Proficiency in a language other than English preferred but not required;
  • Prior experience directing traffic preferred but not required.

Skills:Knowledge of police methods practices and procedures is beneficial; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to prepare clear comprehensive reports; ability to deal courteously but firmly with the public; ability to analyze situation and to adopt quick effective and reasonable courses of action with due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances.

Physical Conditions & Additional Information

Physical requirements for this position as outlined by the Department of Labor: MEDIUM WORK: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. occasionally and/or up to 30 lbs. frequently and/or up to 10 lbs. constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.

This is a safety sensitive position subject to drug and alcohol testing for preemployment reasonable suspicion postaccident and random testing.

Dependent upon assignment a majority of time spent in this position involves outside work which may involve extreme temperatures extreme brightness radiant energy and/or electrical position requires regular use of traffic/roadways and requires driving a Cityowned vehicle and is subject to the vehicle use policy and procedures.

Must be able to work in varied local environments utilizing department assigned clothing and equipment. This position involves driving walking standing and repetitive entry/exit from city vehicle in all types of weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
