The Supervisor Animal Containment Laboratory under direction is responsible for coordinating and overseeing all aspects of animal husbandry in ABSL2 and BSL3Ag environments; ensuring biocontainment practices are implemented and followed; and providing supervision and leadership of laboratory animal technical staff.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelors degree in an agricultural or animalrelated field or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Three years of related experience.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Proficiency with Office suite applications.

  • Strong organizational skills.

  • Ability to handle restrain clinically observe and identify health concerns in a wide range of large animal species.

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively to ensure understanding.

  • Ability to communicate with and supervise team members proficiently.

Responsibilities

  • Animal Care and Husbandry Supervises and performs animal room cleaning feeding and health checks. Assists with animal handling and sample collection and animal treatments as needed. Assists in the screening of newly arrived animals. Monitors preoperative and postoperative animals. Observes animals for disease and symptoms of abnormalities. Works with the Animal Division Manager to ensure animal care staff are appropriately providing care to animals. Monitors and records environmental parameters and conditions. Initiates and maintains animal room logs animal health records census sheets and other essential records as required. Completes an annual health evaluation through the Biosafety Occupational Health Program to include blood titers respirator fit testing and possibly vaccinations. Completes annual Select Agent Program training.

  • Personnel Supervision and Leadership Coordinates all aspects of animal husbandry in in ABSL2 and BSL3Ag environments. Oversees scheduling and task management for animal technical staff. Provides supervision and leadership of animal technical staff. Coaches and counsels husbandry staff of rules regulations and standards related to animal research protocols.

  • Biocontainment and Process Supervision Supervises animal movement within the building. Supervises penning setup and movement/storage. Oversees setup of housing areas for new studies and ensures they are decontaminated at the end of the study in accordance with facility procedures. Coordinates animal room activities with GHRC facilities staff as necessary. Coordinates purchases for animal and biocontainmentrelated supplies. Coordinates and performs waste management from biocontainment laboratory spaces including autoclaving of contaminated materials from animal rooms and ancillary spaces. Maintains biological validation logs of the processes. Performs aerosolized hydrogen peroxide decontamination as required.

Other Requirements and Factors

  • Persons in this position are considered essential when the University declares an emergency campus closure class cancellation etc. Must report to work and remain on duty unless relived by the direct supervisor.

  • Must be able to undergo favorable background investigation and National Select Agent Registration security risk assessment within 2 months of hire.

  • The job has the potential for safety hazard exposures and infectious disease exposures.

  • Required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).

  • May be required to work weekends holidays or after normal working hours 5:00 PM).

  • This position is security sensitive

  • This position requires compliance with state and federal laws/codes and Texas A&M University System/TAMU policies regulations rules and procedures

  • All tasks and job responsibilities must be performed safely without injury to self or others in compliance with System and University safety requirements
