This position is located at:

Primary Purpose of Position:

The position is the lead archivist for preservation reformatting projects undertaken by the section including the digitization of original collection materials development of associated metadata and catalog information and accessioning of the security microfilm. It provides unit leadership on complex catalog data cleanup and searching. It collaborates with archivists in Government Records Section to develop improvements in the catalog data and resolve public records custodians research requests involving the divisions security microfilm collection.


Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Oversight over preservation reformatting projects from development to completion.
  • Provide ongoing physical and intellectual management reference and access needs for the divisions microfilm holdings.
  • Develop and improve archival catalog descriptions and have flexibility and versatility with using varying software and equipment depending on the needs of the project.
  • Collaborate with staff throughout the division and with stakeholders.

Position/Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to work MondayFriday 8am5pm.
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs. and stand for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to work in an environment in which exposure to chemicals dust and mold is possible.
  • Must be able to work an occasional Saturday in the Archives Public Service Unit (Search Room).

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Masters degree in history public history or library and information science;
OR
Masters degree in a related discipline with coursework in archival and records management from an appropriately accredited institution;

an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Supplemental and Contact Information

Section/Unit Description:

The Imaging Unit of the Collections Management Branch is responsible for the creation of security images of public records for state local and municipal agencies. The Unit maintains physical and intellectual control for all microfilm through transfer accession description and storage practices consistent with professional standards. The Unit handles reference and access services for microfilm holdings and provides various records management services to government agencies in North Carolina. The Unit is also responsible for digitization and preservation reformatting of collections and for the overall protection of the State Archives security microfilm holdings in its vaults.
