Description Summary
The Director of Accounting is responsible for overseeing all financial functions of the church including accounting operations financial reporting donor fund tracking budgeting support and software systems management. This role ensures transparency accuracy and stewardship of church resources and supports the broader ministry through sound financial leadership. The Director of Accounting must be an active engaged member of the church.
Job Responsibilities
Accounting & Financial Oversight:
Oversee daily accounting functions including accounts payable contributions payroll bank reconciliations and general ledger maintenance.
Manage and develop the accounting team providing mentorship performance feedback and training.
Supervise monthend and yearend close processes reconciling all balance sheet accounts and producing timely financial statements.
Lead the churchs annual audit and serve as the primary liaison with external auditors.
General Ledger Management:
Monitor all accounting transactions to ensure accurate classification and coding within the general ledger.
Maintain accurate records of fixed assets including capitalization depreciation and disposals in accordance with accounting policies.
Investigate and resolve discrepancies errors and unusual activity promptly.
Donor & Fund Accounting:
Manage restricted designated and unrestricted funds in accordance with donor intent and church policies.
Analyze giving patterns and donor trends to support stewardship strategies and ministry planning.
Generate regular and adhoc donor reports to help identify opportunities for engagement growth and retention.
Software & Systems Management:
Lead the implementation administration and optimization of all accountingrelated software.
Evaluate and integrate auxiliary platforms for payroll expense reporting online giving and budgeting.
Train staff and ministry leaders on software tools and financial best practices.
Strategic & Ministry Support:
Provide regular financial reporting and insights to leadership teams and ministry departments.
Support the annual budgeting process in collaboration with the Executive Director of Business Administration.
Help guide financial policy development and internal control practices that reflect both fiscal responsibility and spiritual stewardship.
Qualifications
Strong analytical and problemsolving skills with experience in data reporting and financial analysis.
Excellent interpersonal communication and team leadership skills.
Experience managing audits budgets and financial reports.
Proficient in accounting and donor software systems Microsoft Office suite and Google Workspace.
Maintains high ethical standards honesty and transparency in all financial practices.
Models servant leadership and a collaborative spirit in working with staff leadership members and attendees.
Demonstrates a heart for ministry and alignment with the values vision and mission of Pleasant Valley.
This position requires church membership.
Education and Experience
Bachelors Degree in Accounting or equivalent experience.
Minimum 7 years of progressive accounting experience including 3 years in a leadership role; nonprofit or church experience preferred.
