Under the direction of the appropriate licensed clinician and in keeping with unit specific standards provides patient care to meet the personal needs and comfort of patients and assists members of the health care team.I. Major Responsibilities:
1. Provides patient care including escorts patient to examination rooms takes and records vital signs collects and documents patient health status history and documents and monitors patient progress following standard procedures. Assists physician and others in clinical procedures as required or directed.
2. As an integral member of the patient care team serves both internal and external customers including patients nurses physicians and other colleagues who support the delivery of care and services.
3. Provides clear timely communication to the appropriate licensed clinician regarding observations and changes seen in patient.
4. Assists in moving lifting positioning and transporting patients by utilizing fall prevention alternative devices/strategies as directed and following the Restraint Policy standards when caring for a restrained patient. Utilizes proper safety techniques and body mechanic in all workrelated activities.
5. Performs EKGs phlebotomy performs Point of Care (POC) tests according to hospital standards. Collects labels and prepares specimens for transport to lab. Performs selected unit specific procedures such as checking status of unit equipment cleaning equipment between patients and proper storage of supplies.
6. Sets up/prepares rooms based on patient care requirements. Assists appropriate licensed clinician in performing routine physical examinations by preparing patient equipment and supplies. May assist physician nurse or others with clinical procedures such as but not limited to lumbar puncture pelvic examinations and/or dressing changes. Assists in the setup maintenance disassembly and cleaning of patient equipment.
7. Cleans sterilizes and repackages instruments and scopes as assigned. Has required skills to operate the sterilization/cleaning systems as necessary.
8. Assists with patient admissions transfers and discharge procedures.
9. Maintains assigned office and/or clinical supplies. Assures accurate inventory of supplies based on approved levels. Rotates stock as required. Initiates requisitions for resupply or special items. Follows up with personnel outside the medical office to expedite timely action and alleviate or report delays as appropriate.
10. Utilizes a variety of electronic informational and patient care systems.
11. Follows procedures for arriving patients and scheduling appointments.
12. Maintains logs organizes patient care chart and/or maintains medical records. May data enter or retrieve medical information from the electronic medical record systems
13. Participates in quality improvement initiatives.
14. Complies with Medical Center Nursing Department Ambulatory and clinic based policies procedures and guidelines.
15. Attends staff meetings and inservice programs as required or directed. Keeps current with hospital and clinic changes by reading communication boards and/or books bulletin boards posted notices and reads and responds to UMMHC e mails on a regular basis.

6. Maintains regular reliable and predictable attendance.
7. Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.

II. Position Qualifications:
All internal transfers and all new hires to this position must obtain a Certified Medical Assistant credential approved by the Department of Health (NHA ARMA etc.. This credential must be obtained no later than 1 year from date of transfer or date of hire. If certification is not obtained within 1 year of hire/transfer the employee will be terminated or employee may apply for another position for which they meet the minimum qualifications (should an opening exist).
License/Certification/Education:
Required:
1. Minimum of a high school education or GED.
2. Medical Assistant Credential approved by the Department of Health (ARMA NHA etc. If not available upon hire/transfer a Medical Assistant credential must be obtained within 1 year of hire/transfer as stated above.
3. This Medical Assistant credential must be maintained once received.
4. Current Basic Life Support or Heart Saver certification from the American Heart Association.
Preferred:
1. Current Certified Nurse Assistant license in Massachusetts
Regardless of certification at time of hire/transfer all new hires and transfers must obtain a Medical Assistant credential within 1 year of hire/transfer date.
Experience/Skills:
Required:
1. One year of related clinical experience.
2. Knowledge of office and laboratory procedures.
3. Must be able to read write and communicate in English in a clear and concise manner.
4. Must utilize proper safety techniques and body mechanics in all workrelated activities.
5. Must have strong interpersonal skills to gather information from individuals build relationships that support collaborative work within the clinic and provide exceptional service to patients.
6. Must have proven interpersonal skills to provides respectful culturally and age appropriate communication with patients staff family visitors and others.
7. Must have proven problemsolving abilities for routine situations and requests assistance from identified resources when more direction is needed.
8. Must be able to remain calm when under stress or in emergency situations.
9. Demonstrates sensitivity and responsiveness to patients needs by acting as a source of information and approaches all interactions with the intention of building positive rapport and relationships.
Preferred:
1. Medical Terminology and computer skills.
Unless certification licensure or registration is required an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
Departmentspecific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.
III. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions:
Position requires work indoors in a patient care environment. Hand dexterity hearing and vision ability to take direction from a patient or provider adjust equipment observe and describe patient observations. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Work is of heavy demand standing and walking most of the time with the possibility of pushing heavy equipment and bending frequently.
