Job Description

Communication Teacher/SLP Assistant (Specializing in Autism Support)

JOB GOAL:

To design and deliver engaging communication lessons that empower students with Autism Spectrum Disorder to achieve greater independence and social success using the Daily Life Therapy approach

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and conduct group communication lessons for classes within the assigned division.
  • Assist SLP in conducting social skills groups as requested.
  • Collaborate with SpeechLanguage Pathologist and Classroom Teacher in developing the communication portion of IEPs and individual student objectives.
  • Support teachers with the implementation of communication objectives and language strategies within the classroom.
  • Collaborate with teachers in the development of visual supports within the classroom and residential environment.
  • Support classroom teachers with the teaching of Daily Life Therapy as needed (lunch snack changing time break time).
  • Participate in all student activities including: extensive physical exercise various forms of exercise including lifting standing squatting and jogging one to three miles daily.
  • Maintain an open honest and tactful relationship with parents and other individuals involved with the students.
  • Maintain professionalism and confidentiality with parents and others.
  • Attend daily division meetings IEP meetings and weekly communication meetings.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by Division Master Teacher Speech Language Pathologist and/or Director of Programming.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience working with students with Autism Spectrum Disorder preferred
  • Bachelors Degree in Communication Disorders or Special Education preferred
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Must be able to work in a multicultural environment
