Join Our Team as a Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant!

The COTA provides unique therapeutic services to enhance the goals and objectives of low vision clients.

The COTA is primarily responsible for implementing the therapeutic program and providing appropriate aspects of quality patient care under the supervision of licensed occupational therapist.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Works in conjunction with and under the supervision of the occupational therapist to implement and execute an established treatment plan.
  • Carries out treatment plans and interventions in accordance with the plan of care established by supervising occupational therapist.
  • Provides occupational therapy intervention on an individual basis or groups on site in home or on nonBraille Institute of America sites under the direction of the occupational therapist.
  • Effectively communicates with supervising occupational therapist concerning clients response to treatment plan.
  • Reports any changes in patient status or needs with supervising occupational therapist on a timely basis.
  • Documents and updates client records using low vision touch point in efforts to outcome all communications as needed to comply with Braille Institute of America standards.
  • Works with supervising occupational therapist to maintain and update inventory of devices and equipment.
  • Works collaboratively with other team members for best client outcomes.
  • Maintains current knowledge of emerging trends and advances in low vision protocols devices outcomes measurements services and referral sources.
  • Train clients in use of basic assistive technology services and optical devices.
  • Participates in Braille Institute of America seminars marketing activities and other special events as needed to promote low vision services and the organizations overall programs and services.
  • Works with clients staff volunteers and current students towards the mission of Braille Institute of America.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. As the organization continues to evolve duties or tasks may change without impacting the overall job description.
  • Complies with all the state licensure federal and regulatory guidelines for occupational therapy assistants.

Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge skills and/or abilities required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential job duties.

Education:

Graduate of an accredited occupational therapy assistant program.

Minimum Requirements:

Position requires good clinical and documentation skills. Also requires communication organization interpersonal problem solving computer and teaching skills. The ability to multitask understand the needs of the visually impaired and recommend solutions to meet their needs is required.

Experience:

Two years of clinical practice preferably in the areas of both pediatrics and geriatrics.

Skills Knowledge and Abilities:

Requires a State licensure or eligible for State licensure as Occupational Therapy Assistant by the National Board for Certification of Occupational Therapists (NBCOT) and the California Board of Occupational Therapy.

License renewal is required every two years and recertification is required every five years involving continuing education and professional experience. Preference for low vision certification or participating in low vision rehabilitation certification program.

Work Environment:

Position works in a standard office environment and adaptive devices for low vision.

Physical Requirements:

May be required to travel throughout the local area to visit clients and make presentations.
