Main Purpose of Job

The Maryland Office of thePublic Defender (OPD) seeks an experienced and impassioned advocate to serve inthe Circuit Court Collateral Unit in Baltimore City Maryland. POSITION DUTIES

Overview of thePosition

Collateral Attorneys work inconjunction with social workers and core staff in a teamoriented environment.Attorneys must be able to balance a clientcentered approach to representationwith advocacy to address systemic inequity and the collateral consequences ofcriminal convictions that lead to deeper system involvement.

Primary duties andresponsibilities

Ability to handlecriminal cases and collateral legal matters.

Ability to workindependently and to recognize and resolve issues related to their workload.

Represents the clientin collateral matters including violation of probation hearings.

Represents clients in bond hearings.

Represents clients in hearings on motions formodification of sentence.

Represents clients in hearings on motions forcommitment to substance abuse treatment.

Conducts legalresearch and analysis including changes in laws legislation procedural rulescourt decisions and case

precedents in preparation for hearings and todetermine/ anticipate legal problems and propose resolutions.

Drafts/reviewsproposes and prepares reports memoranda in opposition briefs legaldocuments motions and

correspondence for clients.

Counsels and advisesclients on changes in law court decisions and legal issues.

Conducts pleanegotiations with prosecutors and other parties to establish agreements toresolve cases favorably for the

client.

Providespostrepresentation followup with the client regarding matters such as clientrelease and other appropriate

collateral issues.

Other duties as assigned by the District PublicDefender for Baltimore City.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Training and qualifications

Demonstratedcommitment to zealous and comprehensive public defense.

Compassion forclients and their lived experiences.

Strong interpersonalskills and the ability to communicate effectively with people with differentlived experiences.

Ability to thrive in afastpaced diverse teamoriented environment.

Exceptionalorganizational legal and administrative skills necessary to handle a highcaseload.

Active membership in good standing in theMaryland Bar or Bar of another state by the start date.

Attorneys barred in anotherstate must become members of the Maryland Bar within 18 months of the startdate.

Salary

Salary is dependent on experienceand the State of Maryland salary rules will apply to any offer made. This wouldbe a lateral transfer for MOPD attorneys.

Assistant Public Defender II: starting at$96227.00$136003.00 (Grade 21: Step 8

Assistant Public Defender III: starting at$106620.00$145151.00 (Grade 22: Step 10
