The Suffolk County Department of Public Works has is an opportunity for undergraduate students to gain skills experience and knowledge in their respective career fields. Fields include but are not limited to:
Highway Engineering
Traffic Engineering
Structural Engineering
Facilities Engineering (Buildings)
Sanitary Engineering (sewers and wastewater)
Architecture
Construction Management (Highways Facilities Sewers)
Vector Control (prevention and control of insectborne diseases)
Interns work in a fastpaced collaborative environment geared toward their field of study. The program incorporates opportunities for professional and personal growth through handson trainings specifically geared toward students and young professionals interested in a career in the public sector. Interns may be invited to participate in projects staffwide workshops and trainings.
Through this program the department seeks extraordinary undergraduate students whom are interested in a career in public service and have:
- Strong written and oral communication;
- Analytical thinking;
- An ability to work well in teams;
- A desire to effectuate positive change on their community.
Typical Work Activities
- Performs a variety of clerical duties in an assigned County department or jurisdiction;
- Observes and participates in the daily activities of the assigned department;
- Assist staff with research writing and analysis.
- Participate in meetings with various stakeholder groups.
- Assist with special projects and assist with office inquiries from both the public and other County agencies.
- Performs duties similar to those of regular fulltime employees of the department.
Pay Rate: $16.00 per hour
Location: Yaphank
Minimum Qualification
- Enrollment in a graduate program at a college with federallyauthorized accreditation or registration by NY State or graduation from a college with federallyauthorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a Masters or Doctorate degree within the past year.
- Previously worked as an Intern II.
NOTE: Employment of high school graduates in this title is limited to two 2 years.
