Job Description

GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

Brigham and Womens Primary Care Associates at Norwood is an Internal Medicine practice located in Norwood Massachusetts. Our goal is to create an environment that maximally fosters healing relationships between patients and their health care team while supporting an outstanding educational experience for future members of that healthcare team. The practice will test innovative models of primary care delivery. It will be continually improving in a way that is accessible to being evaluated and disseminated. The practice will be certifiable at the highest level as a Patientcentered Medical Home.

Under the direct supervision of the Practice Manager the Medical Assistant is responsible for assisting the healthcare team with the care and management of patients during their visit. The Medical Assistant will perform routine administrative clinical tasks to maintain and support the office and to ensure efficient patient flow through the office.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Maintain patient flow by escorting patients from the waiting area to the examination room. Assist with the ongoing management of patient flow by ensuring that rooms are efficiently utilized thereby minimizing patient wait time.

Prepare patients for their visit examination procedure and/or treatment in accordance with established procedures. Obtain vital signs as necessary. As instructed document the reason for visit based on information received from the patient. Use recognized and accurate medical terminology and abbreviations for all documentation.

Assist in the collection labeling and processing of specimens. As instructed perform phlebotomy and simple laboratory tests as requested and as outlined in relevant regulations.

Assist physicians and nurses with patient care as well as support activities relating to referrals laboratory work diagnostic testing patient education etc.

Maintain a high quality patient care environment by cleaning preparing and stocking all examination rooms and treatment areas in accordance with established standards. Assist in the care cleaning sterilization and maintenance of medical equipment and instruments. This includes monitoring relevant expiration dates and established maintenance schedules. May provide assistance in maintaining medical supply inventories including monitoring relevant expiration dates.

In accordance with practice protocols ensure that charts vouchers ancillary reports films and other necessary paperwork are available to be used by the physician and his/her team during the visit for all previously scheduled patient appointments. Obtain and sort laboratory and diagnostic test results in accordance with the practice protocols.

Understand respect and demonstrate patient confidentiality in all endeavors. Understand the legal ramifications of violating any component of patient confidentiality. Understand and demonstrate the protocol related to procedures for the release of patient information.

Understand respect and demonstrate compliance with established parameters of the Medical Assistant position by performing only those activities delineated in this job description. Specifically prohibited activities include (but are not limited to):

oAdministering medication via injections with the exception of the influenza vaccine in nonDPH certified cites.

oPreparing administering and/or managing intravenous and inhaled medications and treatments.

oMaking independent medical decisions regarding patients either in person or via the telephone. The Medical Assistant may however advise patients based on a physicianpatient formulary or act as an information conduit between the physician/team and the patient. In such cases the Medical Assistant should document the communication.

oAssessing patient acuity or independently making any other type of patient assessment including assessing the clinical and/or physical status of patients.

oClosing/suturing wounds.

oManaging and/or independently prescribing medication refills.

oManaging and/or independently providing medication samples or taking inventory of such samples.

oIndependently referring patients for other services or to other physicians.

Assist coworkers in their duties (within the limitations of training and scope of the practice).

Perform EKGs as requested.

Participate in process improvement groups.

Participate in trainings in respect to care coordination supporting patients in selfmanagement selfefficacy and behavior change patient population management and communication skills as directed and required for the role.

Extended and/or weekend hours may be required.

Staff are expected to participate in regular team meetings as well as ongoing continuous improvement efforts.

All other duties as prescribed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

May not currently hold a valid nursing license.

Minimum of a High School diploma GED or equivalent experience.

Graduate of an approved Medical Assistant certification program (or demonstrated knowledge of competencies required to perform essential functions of position).

Ambulatory care experience a plus but not required.

Primary care experience a plus but not required.

Must be OSHA CLIA and HIPAA knowledgeable.

1 2 years of experience preferred.

CPR Certification for the Healthcare Provider optional.

SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

Medical terminology

Calculating figures and amounts such as proportions percentages and volume.

Simple arithmetic calculations for proper patient identification to take and record weight and height measurements vital signs and blood pressure collection as authorized.

Normal ranges of signs and symptoms/when to alert the MD

Handwashing

Modifications for obese patients

Patients with disabilities

Basic knowledge of office operations and standards:

Front desk crosstraining.

Basic understanding of office procedures including filing copying scanning printing and faxing.

Phone skills: ability to use phone system answer and screen calls put calls on hold.

Verbal skills: ability to answer questions and give information as appropriate and communicate in a professional courteous clear and concise manner.

Writing skills: basic use of email ability to take accurate and complete messages.

Organization skills: ability to manage work processes in a neat and orderly way and to sort and to sort and alphabetize. Ability to follow instructions.

System skills: basic computer literacy and understanding of office systems ability to type and enter data.

Knowledgeable and compliant with all hospital State and Federal requirements (where applicable to job performance) including policy and procedures with The Joint Commission and HIPAA.
