The Department of Ecology is hiring a DoubleShell Tank and 242A Lead Engineer (Environmental Engineer 5within theNuclear Waste Program.Location:
- Richland Field Office in Richland WA.
- Upon hire you must live within a commutable distance from the duty station.
Schedule:
- This position is eligible for telework and flexible schedule options.
- A minimum of one day per week is required in the office.
- Schedules are dependent upon position needs and are subject to change.

Duties
Join our team and apply your engineering expertise to ensure the safe and compliant operation of doubleshell highlevel waste tanks and the 242A Evaporator at the Hanford Nuclear Facility. The Hanford site historically used for nuclear weapons production stores radioactive waste in 149 singleshell tanks and 28 doubleshell tanks with an approximate capacity of 1 million gallons each.
In this role you will be responsible for evaluating various engineering processes and technologies proposed by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to assess their effectiveness in treating highlevel radioactive waste maintaining its longterm storage and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. Additionally you will review the DOEs Washington State Dangerous Waste Permit application to ensure its specifications comply with Washington State Dangerous Waste regulations.
This position offers both challenges and rewards as you support and contribute to the cleanup of one of the most polluted sites in the United States.
What you will do:
- Collaborate with sitewide Permit Regulatory Leads to incorporate the doubleshell tanks and 242A Evaporator into the Dangerous Waste SiteWide Permit.
- Serve as the Nuclear Waste Program (NWP) expert on the engineered systems associated with the Evaporator System and doubleshell tanks.
- Serve as the NWP expert on chemical engineering with a specific focus on the waste in the doubleshell tanks.
- Conduct engineering inspections in the field and quality control evaluations to ensure compliance with permit conditions.
- Review and comment on engineering documents such as integrity assessments work plans and system plans.

Required Qualifications:- Registration as a Professional Engineer in the state of Washington or another state based on registration requirements equivalent to those in Washington AND
- Five 5 years of experience in environmental engineering.
NOTE: Requirements for professional registration as an engineer in the state of Washington are eight years of professional experience (which may include up to four years of collegelevel engineering education) and successful completion of sixteen hours of professional licensing exams. Applicants qualifying through the licensing equivalency option must achieve professional registration as an engineer in the State of Washington within six months of appointment to this class.

Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:
- Must possess and maintain a valid drivers license.
- Must meet U.S. Department of Energy requirements to acquire and maintain a badge for access to the Hanford Site.
- Must complete initial 40hour HAZWOPER training within six months of appointment and annual 8hour HAZWOPER Refresher training.
Desired Qualifications:- Preferred experience in: design construction and/or operation of systems supporting waste treatment systems including corrosion phenomena (including chemistry and potential impacts on waste systems); physical and biological sciences as related to environmental engineering; principles and practices of environmental engineering; laws and regulations governing waste systems tanks and environmental issues (e.g. WACothers).
