Job Description

Position Overview:

This position plays a key role within the Product Development organization. As an engineering leader you will drive the creation of innovative mechanical designs for nextgeneration battery pack architectures. Your responsibilities will span the entire design lifecycle from concept ideation and prototyping to detailed part design analysis and final production. You will work closely with crossfunctional teams to ensure optimal performance manufacturability and scalability of battery systems all while adhering to the highest industry standards and advancing sustainability objectives.

About the Role You will:

As a Battery Engineering Intern you will:

  • Collaborate with the engineering team to design prototype and validate innovative battery pack architectures.
  • Assist in creating detailed mechanical part designs ensuring manufacturability and alignment with Proterras production standards.
  • Conduct mechanical testing and validation to ensure compliance with safety reliability and performance requirements.
  • Support design optimization for performance cost and scalability working closely with manufacturing and production teams.
  • Analyze and resolve engineering challenges related to materials thermal management and structural integrity.
  • Participate in crossfunctional reviews to ensure design and production readiness.

  • You will report to the Battery Pack Engineering Manager and collaborate with other Engineering team members located at our R&D headquarters in Burlingame CA and manufacturing facility near Greer SC.

Your Experience Includes:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering Materials Science or a related field.
  • Experience with 3D CAD software (such as SolidWorks CATIA or similar).
  • Strong analytical and problemsolving skills with a focus on mechanical design and materials.
  • Knowledge of battery systems thermal management or structural mechanics is a plus.
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills.
  • Passion for electric vehicle technology and sustainable solutions.
  • Physical Demands
    • May work various shifts as needed; may be requested to travel to different locations.
    • Lifting up to 25 pounds and occasionally 50 pounds.
    • Able to walk stand crouch bench kneel lift carry and reach as needed in large and tight spaces.
    • Good eye/hand coordination and ability to identify color variations depth perceptions and close or distance visual items.
    • Manual dexterity with occasional repetitive finger motion.
  • Environmental Demands
    • Ability to work in manufacturing environment with extreme heat and cold conditions.
    • Wear protective clothing or respiratory protective equipment.
    • Works with irritant chemicals gases etc.

Additional Details

  • Location: This is a 40 hour per week paid internship opportunity based in Burlingame California at Proterra Powered.
  • Compensation: Undergraduate : $23.00 $27.00 per hour; Graduate : $29.00 $33.00 per hour.
  • Duration: This internship will run from June 2025 August 2025.
