STVs Chicago Transportation team is looking for an experienced and highly skilled Transportation/Highway Resident Engineer to oversee and manage key transportation projects. The ideal candidate will bring over 5 years of experience in construction management and inspection of transportation projects with a strong background in working with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and a deep understanding of client requirements. This role calls for a detailoriented leader with technical expertise and a proven ability to manage field staff and deliver quality projects on time and within budget.
As a Resident Engineer you will:
Lead and supervise a field inspection team ensuring effective project and budget monitoring.
Review and assess the construction schedule chair jobrelated meetings and work closely with contractors to ensure contract compliance.
Serve as the Owners onsite representative coordinating with contractors to oversee quality schedule and cost control ensuring adherence to the projects contractual obligations.
Provide critical recommendations to the Design Engineer on contractor requests and facilitate a smooth communication process between all stakeholders.
Ensure that all work complies with federal and state laws policies procedures and standards.
Work independently setting your own work plan and priorities to meet project objectives with minimal supervision.
Key Responsibilities:
Ensure contractor work conforms to contract documents and specifications.
Perform detailed onsite inspections material testing and field measurements to support monthly and final estimates.
Oversee construction and audit records ensuring compliance with all regulations.
Review shop drawings specifications estimates change orders and supplemental agreements for accuracy and compliance.
Monitor project progress versus planned schedules report trends and variances and ensure timely project completion.
Assist the Project Manager with contract administration including budgeting and financial reporting.
Analyze and resolve contract disputes design/field issues and differences between contractors and inspectors.
Assess contractor compliance with plans specifications and quality standards resolving any issues to maintain project alignment.
Review change orders extra work orders and final estimates prior to submittal ensuring accuracy and completeness.
Ensure completion of work within budget meeting client requirements and adhering to company policies.
Develop and review engineeringrelated documents reports and remediation plans to support project success.
Required Experience:
Minimum of 10 years of relevant Resident Engineering experience with infrastructure construction projects Bachelors degree in Engineering is required. Professional Engineer (PE) registration is required. Previous experience working with Illinois transportation clients such as IDOT Illinois Tollway CDOT and county agencies. Certified Construction Manager (CCM) certification is a plus.
Competencies:
Thorough understanding of standards and specifications for roadways and bridges. Expertise in construction phasing sequencing and maintenance of traffic operations. Strong knowledge of bridge construction techniques. Experience with records and documentation for construction projects ensuring compliance with applicable standards. Strong analytical and problemsolving skills with the ability to identify risks and implement mitigation strategies.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Ability to perform light work (lifting up to 20 lbs. and frequently carrying objects 10 lbs. or more). Must be able to stand for prolonged periods of time. Capable of performing repetitive motions involving wrists hands and/or fingers. Strong close visual acuity for data analysis reading and viewing computer screens. Mobility to navigate job sites including walking bending crawling climbing squatting kneeling and the use of required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
