Description

Essential Functions
This is work performed to provide care and custody of adult prisoners and to maintain order and discipline among the prisoners of the Mason County Jail. Employees in this classification are responsible for the operation of the jail on a 24hour 7dayaweek basis and the direct and indirect supervision of inmates.
- Monitor and control the activities of inmates either individually or in groups.
- Use independent judgment to take emergency action when necessary including verbal deescalation physical and lethal uses of force.
- Take informal action to correct inmate behavior as appropriate.
- Conduct security checks and maintain security in all areas of the jail as assigned.
- Write all required reports/documentation of activity.
- Investigate suspected rule violations.
- Perform all physical and administrative tasks to book search and release prisoners.
- Answer telephone calls and monitor jail access and egress.
- Operate office equipment communications equipment personal computers and corrections automated systems.
- Communicate effectively verbally and in writing to people of all ages and from all social cultural ethnic and economic backgrounds.
- Perform duties of the position in a confined controlled and high security environment.
- Perform the functions and duties of all shifts in all required areas of the facility.
- When commissioned and authorized carry arms while transporting prisoners outside the jails or on other specific assigned duties.
- Maintain regular predictable and punctual attendance during regularly scheduled work hours at assigned worksite.
- Maintain the physical ability to deal with physical confrontational or combative situations through the use of defensive tactics including use of reasonable force up to and including deadly force.
- Regular reliable and punctual attendance.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school graduate or have a GED
- Minimum of 21 years of age
- Pursuant to RCW 41.14.100 must be acitizen of the United States or a lawful permanent resident who can read and write the English language.
- A valid Washington State Drivers License
- Current Corrections Officer certification by the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission or have equivalent state approved corrections officer training certification from another state and meet the following qualifications:
- Have the ability to obtain an equivalency certification within the first twelve 12 months of employment by meeting the standards of the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission; and
- Have successfully completed the testing process and been hired by another jurisdiction from a civil service commission certified eligibility list or other like process; and
- Have successfully completed a probationary period with the current or previous employer; and
- Have been continuously employed by the present or previous employer as a fulltime paid civilian corrections officer for at least twelve 12 months.
Supplemental Information
Retirement: Public Safety Employees Retirement System (PSERS) Plan 2 is a 401(a) lifetime retirement pension plan available to public safety employees in Washington. PSERS Plan 2 employee contribution rate: 6.73 with additional County contributions
Clothing Allowance:$75.00 per month
Education Pay: AA Degree 1.5 BA Degree 3 Masters Degree 4.5
Bilingual Pay: Fluency $75.00 per month Medical Certification $100.00 per month Legal Court Certification $125.00 per month
Leave:2 Floating Holidays 2 Premium Days 96 hours of Sick Leave and 96 hours of Vacation Leave
Holiday: Employees receive additional pay for the 12 recognized holidays
Medical Dental Vision:Employer paid with no additional cost for eligible dependents
Life / AD&D: Employer paid basic life and AD&D insurance
Longevity:The County provides additional monthly compensation to recognize continuous length of service for the 6th through 10th year: $65.00 11th through 14th year: $90.00 15th through 19th year: $130.00 20th through 24th year: $150.00 and 25th year and over $165.00.
Officer in Charge: Additional $3.00 per hour while working in capacity
