Description
San Diego State University (SDSU) is seeking to build its faculty pool to teach for VISTA (Valuing Incarcerated Scholars through Academia) SDSUs BA degree completion program on site at Centinela State Prison. We are seeking faculty with experience in the areas of Journalism and Media Studies Communication Design and General Education. Experience teaching in prisons is welcome but not required. Faculty will receive training to be successful teaching in this unique and rewarding environment.
SDSU is currently providing BA degrees in Interdisciplinary Studies (IS3D) and Journalism and developing a Humanities degree. The degrees are designed to provide critical and creative thinking innovation and the development of professional skills. Faculty provide engaged learning in inclusive classroom environments and are encouraged to participate in collaborative planning.
We are seeking faculty to lead courses on site at the Centinela State Prison (CEN) in the Imperial Valley. Faculty will be hired by SDSU Global Campus. Faculty invited to teach in VISTA are paid to participate in two required trainings one at SDSU and one at CEN and are compensated for mileage from the SDSU campus to the prison for the training and to teach the courses.
All courses will be offered through SDSU Global Campus. Instruction will be in person onsite at Centinela Prison under the terms and conditions set forth in Article 40 of the California Faculty Association contract. SDSU faculty will be assigned Global Campus work as additional employment under the terms of Article 38 and does not diminish entitlement rights associated with stateside appointments.
Compensation is on a percourse basis. Anticipated salary range is available here and estimated for a minimum of 10 students.
Qualifications
We welcome applications from qualified temporary tenuretrack and tenured faculty (including nonSDSU faculty) with demonstrated experience in teaching higher education in the disciplines noted above. Faculty with experience teaching in carceral or alternative settings and/or with lived experience of incarceration or systemimpaction are encouraged to apply.

The person holding this position is considered a mandated reporter under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. SDSU will make a conditional offer of employment which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current SDSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.
