Looking for a role that will have a meaningful impact on underwriting performance for Markel International

We are looking for an individual to promote technical pricing best standards through the ownership of the International Pricing Standards.

The opportunity:

As part of the Office of the Chief Underwriting Officer (OCUO) you will be responsible for the strategy drafting and ensuring divisional underwriting activity adheres to best practice through formal and informal reviews.

You will be required to build relationships across all underwriting divisions across a number of locations from Canada through to the UK and Europe to Asia and Australia as well as with departments including Actuarial and Portfolio Analytics.

What youll be doing:

  • Responsible for International Pricing Standards ensuring these are in line with industry best practice
  • Conduct pricing reviews ensuring technical pricing capability is aligned to internal and external standards
  • Report the results of these activities to the Underwriting Committee and ensure by working with underwriting divisions that remediation is evidenced to the satisfaction of Risk Compliance and Internal Audit.
  • Advise & input on International technical pricing strategy
  • Support preparation of selfattestation to Lloyds under Principles for Doing Business Pillar 1: Underwriting Profitability
  • Support whole account portfolio management activities making sure underwriting is in accord with Markels International Portfolio Management Standards and applicable external standards
  • Support reunderwriting activities where necessary ensuring quantification of underwriting actions is realistic
  • Advise and input on International portfolio management framework ensuring the best possible chance of achieving required underwriting returns across the cycle
  • Review and support production of external returns including to Lloyds ensuring their timeliness and adherence to Markels standards
  • Work closely with underwriting leadership to understand Markels product lines and the business planning pricing and portfolio management considerations for each
  • Implement the above through collaboration with and delegation to local underwriting and oversight teams across Markels regions with as little activity taking place within OCUO as possible.

Our musthaves:

  • Advanced understanding of insurance reinsurance and actuarial concepts.
  • An actuarial qualification is encouraged but not essential.
  • An ability to keep up to date with Markels products and the global PEST factors affecting their risks and performance
  • Ability to problem solve with limited support on ambiguous requests or requirements
  • An ability to understand the key features of Markels insurance products and reinsurance treaties.
  • An ability to build relationships and credibility with senior underwriting and managing directors across International and at Group level and thus able to maintain their support for the teams activities.
